Who We Are:
The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s Netherlands Network. The British Embassy in The Hague is currently looking for an energetic and supportive Community Liaison Officer (CLO).
Main purpose of job:
The successful candidate, who will be based at the Embassy in The Hague, will work with our Amsterdam-based CLO to be at the heart of our community across the UKinNL Embassy network. The CLOs are the pinnacle of our UK diplomatic community. They ensure our UK Based Officers/Diplomats and their families, have a smooth arrival and settle into life in The Netherlands quickly. The CLOs offer a wealth of information and carry out essential returns required from our UK Headquarters on behalf of the Embassy.
The CLOs also play a central role in creating and maintaining a supportive and cohesive community on our expanding UK government platform and provide an essential, independent resource to represent the needs of our community with the Embassy’s management team.
The CLO will sit within the Embassy’s supportive Corporate Services Team who deal with a diverse portfolio, enabling the network to deliver key policy and operational priorities in support of our Country Business Plan.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Work closely with Post Management for the well-being of all staff at Post, with primary function as advocate for and provision of support to UK-based staff and families (FCDO and Partners Across Government (PAGs)) on family and community issues, principally in the areas of information gathering, welfare and communication.
- Support UK-based diplomats and their families across our three locations in The Netherlands in matters relating to their arrival and departure and everything in-between, including administrative support with registration with local authorities and healthcare insurance;
- Provide advice to UK-based families on various issues including child and adult education, information about local neighbourhoods, spouse/partner employment opportunities, recreational facilities and health matters;
- Welfare at Post: welcoming all staff on posting/temporary duty/duty visits or deployment and accompanying families to ensure as smooth an integration as possible into the life of the Embassy community; following up to check that the settling in process is working; being a source of referral and support where questions, problems and difficulties arise; providing short Post community induction. CLOs are not expected to be medically trained and have no medical responsibility.
- Participate in The Embassy’s Housing Committee providing an independent route for conversations about any concerns from UK Based Officers;
- Take part in various Committees within the Embassy, including the Crisis Committee and contribute to contingency planning;
- Provide regular updates for the FCDO Families Association including educational brochures for approved schools, updates of post reports, employment information and relevant information on local amenities;
- Ensure centrally requested returns are submitted on time, including the Cost of Living Allowance return twice a year;
- Update the Post Welcome Pack and Post Information Report;
- Produce periodic “what’s on” newsletters for the whole of our community with focus on North and South Holland.

- Experience with the full suite of Microsoft applications;
- Fluent written and spoken English (min C1 level accordingly to CEFR*);
- Experience of life overseas as an expat (specifically not only as a student)

The base salary for this position is €2,311.59 gross per month, based on a working week of 21,6 hours. In addition, an 8% holiday allowance is payable each year. The successful candidate will initially be offered a 12 months employment contract with the possibility of renewal at Administrative Officer (AO) grade.
