Description of Work Unit The NREL is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.

Position Summary
  • Assist in development of outreach and education plans that are effective in engaging new and current users of the Paustian group’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory tools.
  • Assist in development of educational materials such as tutorials, help page content, and instructional videos to support the Paustian group’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory tools.
  • Assist and/or lead education and guidance to users of the greenhouse gas inventory tools.
  • Conduct testing of the Paustian group’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory tools to support outreach activities.
  • Assist in communication with the greenhouse gas inventory tool user base using social media.
  • Support other research through desktop analysis and field work, as needed.
  • Occasional travel within the U.S. and to international destinations may be required.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, soil science, forestry, animal science, natural resource management, environmental science, environmental education, or a related field in natural resources or agriculture.
  • At least 1 year of experience doing technical writing or preparing web content in support of software, physical products, online instruction, or related products or processes.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a position that requires regular one-on-one or public presentations of instructional or informative content to individuals or groups.
  • At least 1 year of experience using social media to communicate with clients, associates, users, and other populations dependent upon a product or tool.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • At least 3 years work experience in agronomy, ecology, forestry, soil science, or a related natural resources field, either for or as an independent producer, for a natural resources services company, in academia, or a related sector.
  • Additional post-graduate advanced coursework is preferable.
  • Experience with adult education and developing content with accessibility standards in mind is preferred
  • Experience with IT and/or web-based tool support is preferable.
  • Experience with greenhouse gas modeling and accounting is preferable.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Outreach
  • Evaluate educational implementation efforts and report educational outcomes
  • Assist and/or lead online and in-person training and workshops for NRCS staff, other partners, and ad-hoc users of the COMET-Tools.
  • Assist and/or lead trainings and workshops for other decision support tools that have been developed within the lab group and future tools.
  • Assist in collaboration with software developers and other scientists to improve the COMET-Farm system based on training activities and evaluations/feedback from users.
  • Assist in management of the COMET-Farm Help Desk requests form, tool users, respond to help requests in a timely manner. Track and maintain all outreach requests and communications.
  • Consult users of the COMET-Tools inputting their unique systems into the tools in an effective manner.
  • Represent the COMET-Team at conferences, filed days and other engagement events.

  • Conduct testing of the COMET-tools from an agronomic viewpoint. Design and analyze methods to obtain user feedback to improve the tools.
  • Work with colleagues to analyze existing greenhouse gas inventory methods and develop improvements to those methods.
