Salary: Grade 8 (£45,585 – £54,395 p.a. depending on experience)

The University of Leeds in collaboration with the University of Sheffield, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, NHS Trusts via Leeds and Sheffield Biomedical Research Centres and regional commercial organisations have been awarded a circa £5M EPSRC Placed Based Impact Acceleration Account (PBIAA) to advance Medical Technology innovations arising from the region’s engineering and physical sciences research base through to adoption by regional companies. The Yorkshire region hosts a vibrant Medical Technologies business cluster, with >200 companies, employing >16,000 people, mostly in high value technical roles, with potential for a £3bn/year industry beyond 2035.

This PBIAA will provide support to bridge the gap and build connections between academic, industrial and clinical assets in the region that will help grow the regional economy. It will provide the regional Medical Technology industry with a vital connection to state-of-the-art research, enabling a sustainable research-derived product development pipeline. In addition, it will support activities to build the regional innovation environment.

We are looking for a professional, proactive, strategically-minded individual with excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills to support the delivery of the PBIAA – accelerating the impact of Medical Technologies arising from regional university research, strengthening and building the regional Medical Technologies innovation environment through knowledge exchange and providing support to exploit new and emerging technological innovations. 

The Business Development Manager (BDM) will be based at the University of Leeds and will focus primarily on supporting business development opportunities for the University of Leeds. Where expertise does not exist at the University, or where collaboration with a regional University is beneficial then the BDM will facilitate such interactions e.g. by making introductions or setting up initial meetings. The BDM will be required to undertake some travel within the Yorkshire region to visit relevant businesses. Beyond the duration of the PBIAA, the post holder will continue to support business development opportunities across medical and health technologies across the University of Leeds.

You will have excellent proven business development skills with the ability to initiate and sustain new business opportunities. You will also have excellent communication and relationship building skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders to develop effective business relationships with companies, civic partners, trade organisations, investors, funding councils, clinicians and associated academic institutions. You will operate in a complex ecosystem spanning academic researchers, clinicians, civic partners and businesses. You will need to have high level analytical skills to understand innovations arising from the research base, unmet needs from a clinical and business perspective, to maximise opportunities for strategic collaborations. The role will require proactive management of a large portfolio of projects, at different Technology Readiness Levels (TRL), thus requiring excellent project management skills.
