Position Title Chair, Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences

Position Information The Department of Agriculture Food and Resource Sciences (DAFRS) seeks an innovative and energetic Chair for a full-time, twelve-month position. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. The Chair will be a faculty member of the department and may teach, conduct research and supervise students as appropriate. They should possess a record of achievement to allow the applicant to be appointed as a tenured professor in the department. The Chair will report to the Dean, School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences.
The department offers B.S. degrees in General Agriculture with several concentrations and Agribusiness Management, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Food and Agricultural Sciences. The department is also actively engaged in research and extension, and has many faculty and staff with split appointments with UMES Extension and UMES Agriculture Experiment Station.
  • Provides overall vision and leadership for the department. The major responsibilities include:
  • Providing administrative leadership and management to enable the department to fulfill its responsibilities and goals.
  • Recruitment, retention, and graduation of students.
  • Leadership in the development of new programs at the undergraduate and graduate level including curriculum development and program reviews.
  • Development of a productive, and collaborative atmosphere for the discharge of the Department’s mission and for student learning and success.
  • Providing meaningful approaches for resolving faculty and student concerns.
  • Recruiting, supervision, mentoring, and performance evaluation of faculty and staff.
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as appropriate.
  • Conducting research/scholarship and providing leadership in external resource mobilization.
  • Representation of the department within the University and with external stakeholders.
  • Stewardship of departmental physical and fiscal resources including state and federal allocated budgets, and competitive grants and contracts.
  • Collaborate with partners from other departments across the university and externally to secure grants and contracts, which build capacity and enhance mission delivery.
  • Represent the school/UMES on internal and external committees, task forces, advisory boards, and to agencies and professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a discipline represented within the programs in the department. (Note: Individuals with degrees outside of the US may be subject to verification. Verification of degree is the responsibility of the candidate.)
  • A record of scholarly achievements, including a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and receiving and managing competitive external funding.
  • Effective teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and advising graduate students.
  • A record of achievement that would allow the applicant to be appointed as a tenured professor in the department.
  • Evidence of administrative ability and experience in academia.
  • Strong commitment to student learning and faculty innovation in achieving learning to enhance undergraduate student performance, particularly in retention and graduation rates.
  • Commitment to promoting faculty development and strengthening the research efforts of a multidisciplinary department.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills including writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience to include but not limited to: strategic planning, personnel management, program planning and implementation, and fiscal management.
  • Ability to function effectively as an independent administrator and as part of a senior administrative team.

  • Administrative experience in academia.
  • Evidence of development of productive collaborative partnerships across academic units, and Demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with external constituencies and stakeholders including public and private organizations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to actively increasing the diversity of the faculty and staff.
  • Ability to take on new responsibilities and work effectively in an environment of change and Demonstrated ability to embrace rapid technological changes including use of distance education and meeting technologies, and other new tools.
