About us

The Save Sight Institute (SSI) is an internationally recognised Flagship Research Centre of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

Established in 1985, it has grown to be one of the top three ophthalmic research institutes in Australia.  It is internationally recognised as a centre of innovative research into ophthalmology and as a centre of excellence for clinical research, learning and teaching. Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney is ranked sixth in the world by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR). It is a highly specialised area of clinical medicine and science and the Save Sight Institute has gathered together a critical mass of clinicians, researchers, equipment and technology which is unique within the University of Sydney. 

About the opportunity

The Communications and Events Officer is responsible for the delivery of communication services to SSI. This includes coordination and delivery of events to internal and external stakeholders and working with SSI researchers to create engaging content to be shared with our community through newsletters, social media, publications and the SSI website.

This role is responsible for all marketing materials that promote the news, activities, impact and milestones of the institute, and works cooperatively with the FMH Marketing Communications team in promoting newsworthy stories across university networks and to the general public.

This role utilises strong organisational skills to enable the coordination and undertaking of a range of activities on a daily and ongoing basis and is performed under the general direction of the SSI Operations Manager.

SSI In-Person and Online annual events include the SSI Community Information Day, KeraClub, DryEyeClub, MRG Information Session and the HDR Student Symposium.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Writing reports and articles to promote the successes and projects of Save Sight Institute

  • expand the reach of SSI and contribute to the promotion of the organisation

  • facilitate and prepare for conferences, events, and meetings and perform minute taking

  • create strong and reputable connections with internal and external stakeholders

  • promote the organisation through various platforms, including magazines, newsletters, social media, reports, and other forms of writing

  • work independently or under the guidance of the SSI Operations Manager

About you

  • tertiary qualifications in Communications or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience

  • previous experience in planning and managing events, conferences and meetings

  • exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written skills

  • computer literacy with proficiency in design and writing programs

  • basic or foundational knowledge of ophthalmology (preferable, however not required)

  • stakeholder management and relationship-building skills

  • previous experience in a multi-faceted, tertiary, or complex organisation.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
