Position description

DataKind is looking for an experienced fundraiser who is passionate about using emerging technology and human-centered design to work towards a more equitable and sustainable future. The Corporate and Foundation Relations lead will be an integral part of DataKind’s growing fundraising team and will build strategic partnerships with potential funders, internal team members and other key stakeholders. We seek a passionate fundraiser who is inspired by the opportunity to close the gap between what data science can provide, and who has access to it.

This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in the U.S. and requires the majority of working hours each day to fall between 8am and 6pm Eastern Standard Time. 

Salary Range


This range is based on DataKind’s standard Senior Manager salary band, which was created using market data from NYC-based nonprofits. Actual salary within the range will be based on the candidate’s experience and internal salary equity scan of active employee(s) with similar role and experience.

About the Opportunity

DataKind raises most of its $5m/year budget from corporations and foundations, and our new Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) Lead will help us expand beyond our current strong donor base. Reporting to the Vice President, Development, the CFR Lead will be responsible for creating and executing strategies that lead to securing philanthropic support from institutional partners. We’re looking for a strong communicator and relationship manager internally and externally as the CFR Lead will cultivate a portfolio of donor relationships as well as partner with Program, Communications, and Finance staff internally to help DataKind compellingly describe the opportunities we see for data science and AI to improve people’s lives across DataKind’s domains – currently Frontline HealthHumanitarian ResponseClimate & Environment, and Economic Opportunity

What You’ll Do

The Corporate and Foundation Relations Lead will be responsible for the following in addition to other projects as assigned:

Portfolio Strategy and Management

  • Develop, implement and manage forward-thinking strategies to 1) increase diversity of funding support, and 2) acquire new partners with the capacity to make six and seven figure contributions.
  • Design prospect strategies to support ambitious fundraising goals and oversee implementation of strategies to achieve those goals, including personally cultivating, soliciting and stewarding current and prospective funders.
  • Establish customized strategies and timetables that include cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for existing and prospective funders.
  • Ensure the timely creation of fundraising/stewardship materials, collateral, and personalized proposals with support from the Communications team. 
  • Utilize Salesforce to track and all prospect activity.

Prospect Engagement

  • Develop customized solicitation strategies for each prospect in pipeline.
  • Develop cultivation plans for prospects in portfolio and perform research needed to identify new prospects.
  • Partner with the Programs team to develop familiarity with programmatic needs, capabilities and priorities and to conceptualize proposals for new initiatives.
  • Execute communications strategies in partnership with the Communications team. 
  • Collaborate with leadership and the Board on the management of select high-capacity donors, including support for meeting preparation and follow up. 
  • Represent DataKind externally and partner with other teams across DataKind to help advance a culture of philanthropy. 
  • Manage required grant reporting as requested by the funder or leadership team.

How You’ll be Measured

Our business development team is data-driven and in a standard year, the Corporate and Foundation Relations Lead will be expected to hit goals around their:

  • Number of solicitations 
  • Number of new prospects identified and engaged
  • Strategic utilization of Salesforce to track all activity and inform moves management process
  • Ability to effectively partner with Programs Team to communicate DataKind’s funding priorities to prospective funders


  • Alignment with DataKind’s mission and values, including our commitment to anti-racism
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience successfully closing six- and seven-figure grants from corporations and foundations (e.g. corporate & foundation relations)
  • Strong writer with demonstrated ability to describe technical ideas in accessible language – ideally, including past experience with data science / artificial intelligence or DataKind’s domains
  • Experience using a content management system database, preferably Salesforce; ideally, experience using a collaborative project management tool like Asana 
  • Expertise in designing and implementing strategies to identify, qualify and solicit diverse constituents 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain long-term, productive relationships internally and externally
  • Familiarity with philanthropic communities a plus, especially funders focusing on DataKind’s current domains – Frontline Health, Humanitarian Response, Climate & Environment, and Economic Opportunity
  • Able to work occasional nights and weekends for meetings or events with our global community of partners and volunteers
