Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II,Public Health and Env Compliance
Office of Environmental Health and Safety
Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
 With over 200 buildings and millions of square feet of occupied space across numerous campuses, Tulane University requires an EHS Specialist III to assist with environmental compliance programs university-wide including, but not limited to air, asbestos, lead, mold, drinking water, hazardous materials, wastewater, stormwater, and SPCC. Assist with the development and maintenance of EHS programs, policies, procedures, and provide training and guidance on compliance requirements. Assist other OEHS personnel in other areas and on other campuses as needed. Serves as a liaison for regulatory agencies, third party consultants, and insurance companies as needed. Participate in OEHS On-Call and Emergency Response Program for safety and health issues at Tulane.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, consensus standards and guidelines including but not limited to Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and     Health Administration, New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board, New Orleans Health Department, Department of Health & Hospitals, Department of Transportation, Centers for Disease Control, etc. 
• Demonstrate ability to develop and implement environmental regulatory programs including the training associated with those programs. 
• Licensed by the State of Louisiana as an Asbestos Inspector and Environmental Lead Inspector or ability to obtain these licenses within 6 months. 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with experience in technical writing and strong presentation skills. 
• Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet/database, and presentation software. 
• Knowledge and/or the ability to learn to operate sampling or analytical equipment. 
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed. 
• Ability to apply working knowledge to help correct identified compliance deficiencies. 
• Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, plus the ability to exercise discretion, make independent judgment decisions, and handle emergency situations. 
• Ability to wear respiratory protection equipment.
Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years’ professional working experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, and experience auditing environmental programs;  
o OR
 o High school diploma or equivalent with 9 years’ professional working experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, and experience auditing environmental programs. 
 • Must have a valid and unrestricted (not including corrective lens needs) U.S. Driver’s license and must meet the Tulane University Motor Vehicle policy criteria to become authorized as a driver.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree from an accredited university.  
• Professional experience in industrial hygiene and/or occupational health. Accredited by the State of Louisiana as an Asbestos Inspector. 
• Two years work experience in a university setting. 
• Experience with construction project review. 
• Professional certification or eligibility for CIH, CHMM, CSP or related credential.
