Position Overview
The Environmental Technician (ET) supports ecological restoration and land management projects, with a focus on invasive species control, native plant installation, and environmental data collection. This field-based role includes planting native vegetation (seeds, plugs, trees), monitoring site conditions, and implementing restoration plans. The position requires regular overnight travel and involves physically demanding work in diverse outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Control invasive species using herbicides, mechanical methods, and land management techniques
- Conduct ecological fieldwork, including wetland assessments and site investigations
- Collect and manage field data (GPS, GIS, photographs, water quality, etc.)
- Analyze data and assist in preparing technical reports and proposals
- Survey invasive species and update treatment maps using GIS software
- Support restoration efforts by installing native seeds, plugs, and trees
- Operate and maintain field equipment (e.g., chainsaws, brush cutters, augers)
- Install and maintain monitoring equipment and instruments
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and reporting requirements
- Coordinate with contract labor and maintain quality control on project sites
- Perform administrative tasks, data entry, and maintain project records
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecology, biology, or related field
- Plant identification skills and willingness to continue learning
- Experience with equipment such as chainsaws, UTVs/ATVs, and two-way radios
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, GPS, and GIS tools
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in challenging conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, and hike long distances in all kinds of weather
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in botany, plant ecology, or forestry
- One to two years’ experience in land management or restoration
- Knowledge of Ohio native and invasive plant species
- Experience with herbicide application and invasive species control
- Prescribed burn experience
- Ability to operate and haul trailers and powered tools
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Familiarity with field data collection and documentation
Work Environment
Work is primarily field-based and may involve exposure to extreme weather, insects, poisonous plants, and rough terrain.
