Position Summary:

MSU Extension seeks candidates to join our summer day camp team. During the summer, MSU Tollgate Farm in Novi MI, offers summer enrichment programming that includes 3 educational horse themed day camps, as well as a Winged Wonders Camp for young people ages 9-14, and 2 Sprouts Farm Camps ages 4-5.

As part of the educational staff, the horse and specialty camp educational leader will lead groups of campers during 3 weeks of horse camp for 12 campers each week, 24 total in each camp, as well as two other camps that focus on science and nature exploration through experiential learning. We are seeking staff with extensive experience with horse riding instruction and a background in one or more of the following areas: education, outdoor/environmental education, animal science, equine management, agricultural science, cooperative games, music, food science, entomology, forestry, gardening, fisheries and wildlife.

Duties:

  • Work closely with with the Horse Camp Coordinator to assist in leading 3 weeks of horse day camp, as well as the Specialty Camp Coordinator and Day Camp Coordinator for the other three weeks
  • Execute safe, educational, and fun experience for campers to learn how to ride and care for horses
  • Lead a group of up to 12 campers
  • Assist with camp check-in processes
  • Communicate with parents about camp behavior and camp schedule
  • Help with preparation of supplies and lesson plans for activities
  • Be comfortable and interested working with elementary, middle, and high school aged youth (4-19 yrs)
  • Implement experiential science curriculum and programs for students of various ages at appropriate levels using research-based methods
  • Observe behavior in daily camp life, respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and deal appropriately with any improper behavior
  • Be responsible for the safety of campers, stewards, fellow staff, and self
  • Work in close proximity with wildlife and farm animals as part of the Horse and Sprouts Camp programs

This is a 10-week position including training prior to the start of camp.

Desired Qualifications

  • Past experience working with youth in formal or informal settings (school, nature center, summer camp, scouts, etc.).
  • Experience caring for horses and teaching horseback riding.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the natural world.
  • Work in close proximity to wildlife and farm animals.
  • Work willingly in all weather (including summer heat and/or rain).
  • Be physically active for an 8-hour day.
  • Demonstrate commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsible behavior at previous positions.
  • Possess current CPR/First Aid certification OR commitment to participate in a training provided and scheduled the first week of camp training by MSU Tollgate Farm.
  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
