Job Summary The Office of Commercialization and Industry Engagement (OCIE) works to grow the research enterprise at Dalhousie University by partnering with the private sector and providing excellent customer service to our research community. Principally a business development and customer service organization, we work to assist researchers in structuring and contracting private sector research, creating demand for additional opportunities, commercializing institutionally owned technology and inventions, supporting Dalhousie’s innovation and entrepreneurship strategy, and generating local economic development. Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Industry Relations (AVP), and working closely with the Managing Director, Research and Innovation in the Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation, the Finance Manager is responsible for all financial activities of the Office of Commercialization and Industry Engagement, including budget development, financial management, reporting, and patent and royalties accounting.
Key Responsibilities
  • Annually formulate the specifics of the operating, research, and special purpose budgets, conferring with the AVP as necessary. This process involves financial analysis and projecting all annual salaries, non-salary expenses, revenues, and budget coordination with the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation.
  • Reconcile monthly budget reports, budget versus actual performance. Report findings to the AVP when required. If budget deficiencies are anticipated during any monthly review, manage strategies to further decrease expenses and or increase revenues.
  • Manage all accounting functions for the Patents and Royalties budget including accounts payable, accounts receivable, account reconciliation, invoicing, revenue disbursements and other financial transactions as required.
  • Review license contracts to ensure compliance with license in receiving royalties and other revenue.
  • Compiles statistics, completes IP surveys and reports for internal and external sources. These metrics are used by regional, national, and international groups to measure commercialization activities and measures Dalhousie’s success on the regional, national, and international stage.
  • Update and maintain project files in the research management database and ensure each file is complete.
Note The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance or business administration, with a minimum of five years’ experience in a similar position (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience working in a law office or business dealing with contracts and patents.
  • Strong accounting and financial management experience, ability to understand financial statements and prepare budgets.
  • Experience in Excel, database systems, information management and reporting.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to be flexible to meet competing priorities and deadlines.
Assets
  • Professional accounting designation strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a university environment.
