Food Service Director

Successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Food Service Department including; food inventory, developing menu, nutrition, scheduling and supervising Food Service staff. Responsible for overseeing all aspects of food preparation; ordering, cooking, serving, storage and kitchen sanitation for all meals served.

36-40 hours/wk Seasonal March- November


  • Must have ServSafe certification or ability to obtain prior to June 1, 2023.
  • Must have previous management experience within food service industry.
  • Possibility for occasional weeknights/weekends.


  • Ensure healthy dietary plan for all campers and staff, including managing special dietary requirements for all guests (three meals /day with an average 100-200 people per meal, served family style with salad bar)
  • Ensure safe food preparation, storage and cleaning of the kitchen and dining area in accordance with Oakland County Health Department regulations.
  • Provide a healthy and safe camp environment and experience for all.
  • Follow all employment policies and procedures outlined by the YMCA of Metro Detroit – YMCA Camping Services.
  • Carry out other duties deemed necessary by the Camp Director.
  • POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Camping Services Executive Director, the Food Service Director is responsible for all aspects of food service at Camp Nissokone; including ordering, food preparation, service, storage and kitchen sanitation. The Food Service Director is also responsible for managing food inventory, developing menu, scheduling and supervising Food Service staff. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Create a healthy dietary plan for all campers and staff, including managing special dietary requirements (vegan/vegetarian/allergies etc.) for all guests at facility serving up to three meals/day.
  • Ensure safe food preparation, storage, sanitation and health standards in accordance with local and state regulations.
  • Maintain high food quality and dining experience for guests.
  • Schedule, train and manage kitchen employees based on number of guests.
  • Follow all employment policies and procedures outlined by the YMCA of Metro Detroit – YMCA Camping Services.
  • Carry out any other duties deemed necessary by the Camp Director.

  • ServSafe certification or ability to obtain is required.
  • Management experience within food service industry is required.
  • Key skills include: Organization/time management, inventory control and financial responsibility, basic computer proficiency (for food ordering and staff scheduling), staff supervision & training.

FACILITIES & PROGRAMS The camp offers day camp, overnight camp and group retreat programs, serving 20-300 people at a time, most often youth ages 4-16. YMCA Camp Ohiyesa features: a dining hall, a health center, cabins, horseback riding, ropes course, zipline, boating, swimming, waterslide, teambuilding course, kayaking, archery and more.
