Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.
This position is located within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS), Service for Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT), of the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy.
The incumbent will report to the Chief of Data and Visualization Unit within the CSDS, or designated officer.
Responsibilities
Takes responsibility for the timely preparation, maintenance and provision of geospatial information and maps in support of the UN operations; Coordinates the collection, processing, evaluation and dissemination of geospatial data including vector, raster, thematic, open data and big data; Conduct geospatial/terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on the mission’s operations; Implements quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures for all products generated and disseminated by the Client Solutions Delivery Section, including geospatial data and web base &mobile map applications.
Designs, implements and maintains global hybrid geospatial database system as well as other geographic information systems (GIS) and associated services, ensuring appropriate data security and access controls; Designs, implements and maintains system backup and disaster recovery plans; Support the design, implementation and maintenance of the UNGSC geospatial information infrastructure including servers and network, GIS Cloud, IOT and AR/VR/MR technologies; and supports the development of geospatial information and mapping applications including web-based and mobile applications, applying ITIL, Agile and DevOps practices.
Coordinates the collection, processing, storage and dissemination of geospatial data with UN Field Offices, DOS UNGIS Section, and UNGSC customers, including UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, and Offices Away of HQ (OAH); and Assists in the promotion of services and undertakes day-to-day geospatial operation matters.
Provides input and conducts geospatial information training and education programmes for UN staff; Participates in mission start-up and other field work as required; Manages junior staff and consultants in carrying out technical tasks in the Client Delivery Section.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geospatial information science, cartography, geography or other disciplines that involve geospatial information related programmes. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job – Specific Qualification
Certification in Project Management is desirable
Certification in any Agile Practice is desirable
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of geospatial information (e.g. geospatial information applications, geospatial database management, geospatial/terrain analysis, cartography and mapping, image processing, GPS and surveying) or related fields is required.
Experience in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software for desktop and cloud base infrastructure (ESRI, Geocortex & Open Source) is required.
Experience with spatial database systems both proprietary (ArcSDE, MS SQL Server) and Open Source (PostgreSQL, PostGIS) are required.
Experience in field operations such as UN peacekeeping or humanitarian operations or similar International related field experience is desirable.
Experience in the use of GIS applications is desirable.
Experience in developing web mapping applications is desirable.
Experience with 2D and 3D graphic software is desirable.
Experience with innovative technologies such as IOT or AR/VR/MR is desirable.
Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams is desirable.
Experience in applying Agile Methodologies in the design and development of geospatial solutions is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
