Position Summary A Herpetologist/Crew Lead (Temporary Research Associate II) position is available with CEMML. This is a temporary, full-time (12-month) appointment located at Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB), California. The Herpetologist Crew Lead (hereafter crew lead) is needed to conduct surveys and lead a crew for inventorying amphibians and reptiles present on EAFB lands, and thus must have experience handling and trapping wildlife, and organizing and implementing field studies. The crew lead will lead survey efforts for terrestrial wildlife and provide leadership guidance for wildlife technicians.
The crew lead will perform a variety of survey techniques to monitor herpetofauna and fish populations including: (1) visual encounter surveys along transects; (2) mark-recapture surveys using capture arrays/pitfall traps; (3) opportunistic sampling along roads, particularly at night; (4) acoustic surveys at wetland and pond complexes. The crew lead will identify all species of reptiles and amphibians observed or captured and collect information on life stage, size, weight, sex, reproductive status, and habitat characteristics. All individuals will be captured using appropriate safety measures and tools to minimize distress for the animals and risk for researchers (i.e., lizard lassoos, snake tongs and hooks) and will be released at the capture site. For wetland and pond complexes, search methods will also include aquatic seining and dip-netting during the day to sample larval life stages and acoustic surveys after sunset to monitor breeding activity. A representative subset of individuals will be euthanized and prepared as voucher specimens with a genomic-quality tissue sample. These specimens and associated data will be maintained in perpetuity in the Herpetology Collection of the California Academy of Sciences. The crew lead will also conduct site visits of EAFB’s Geographically Separated Units (GSUs) in California and Nevada. Each site visit will consist of a brief natural resources survey including a baseline assessment of flora, fauna, geology, hydrology, habitat type, and any natural disturbances. Other duties of the crew lead also include data proofing and management, report writing, and preparation of outreach materials. The crew lead may also assist with other natural resource surveys on EAFB including (but not limited to): large mammal surveys, vegetation/habitat surveys, and wetland surveys.
