The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine (UMSOM) Center for Vaccine Development
and Global Health (CVD) brings together more than four decades of innovative and life-saving research on  vaccines and infectious diseases (http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/cvd/). As an organized research  center within the UMSOM, CVD  comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and  implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed  countries. We work to prevent and treat enteric and respiratory diseases; to reduce the threat of malaria and  antimicrobial resistance; and to identify, understand, and combat other tropical and emerging pathogens.
The CVD is seeking a Laboratory Research Specialist or Laboratory Research Assistant to join the

Shigella Vaccine Unit.

Laboratory Research Assistant
Primary Duties:

  • Independently perform day to day laboratory research activities such as:
    • Basic bacteriology techniques;
    • Molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR, western blots, and cell culture assays;
    • Preparation of buffers, laboratory solutions, media, and reagents following established formulas and procedures.
  • Participate in the design of research studies to characterize basic mechanisms of bacterial  pathogenesis, study host pathogen interactions, and design strategies to engineer live attenuated vaccine  candidates.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Assist in performance of pre-clinical evaluation studies including in vitro and in vivo assays, and immune response assays and maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Work cooperatively with lab members and collaborators to develop new techniques for advancing vaccine candidates.
  • Asist with day-to-day laboratory operations including ensuring quality control and safety compliance,  maintenance of databases, ordering supplies, and general laboratory housekeeping.
  • Conduct library and literature research and participate in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific  illustrations, and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and  grant proposals.
  • Learn and perform other related duties as assigned.

Laboratory Research Specialist
Primary Duties:

  • Perform independent projects and participate in the design of research studies to characterize basic  mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, study host pathogen interactions, and design strategies to engineer  live attenuated vaccine candidates.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform all phases of pre-clinical evaluation including in vitro and in vivo assays, and immune response  assays and maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Work cooperatively with lab members and collaborators to develop new techniques for advancing  vaccine candidates and assist in teaching junior lab members assays and techniques.
  • Asist with day-to-day laboratory operations including ensuring quality control and safety compliance,  maintenance of databases, writing standard operating procedures and assist in writing project reports.
  • Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning,  ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues.
  • Conduct library and literature research and participate in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific
  • Illustrations, and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and  grant proposals. Present research findings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  

Laboratory Research Assistant

Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Supervisory Experience: N/A
Certification/Licensure: N/A
Other: Will require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of  hazardous materials and other sponsor-based trainings. 

May consider a combination of directly related experience and education
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Skill in laboratory techniques including pipetting, solution preparation, handling hazardous materials.
  • Ability to learn bacteriology, molecular biology and immunology-related research techniques
  • Ability to learn cell culture and organoid models or animal models.
  • Ability to compile and organize accurate data.
  • Ability to work in a group environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, study sponsors, and other scientists.
  • Ability to be self-motivated to learn new assays and techniques to advance lab projects.

 
Laboratory Research Specialist 
 
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
Supervisory Experience: N/A
Certification/Licensure: N/A

Other: Will require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of  hazardous materials and other sponsor-based trainings. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of bacteriology, molecular biology and immunology-related research techniques.
  • Skill in laboratory techniques including pipetting, solution preparation, handling hazardous materials.
  • Skill in working with cell culture, organoid models or animal models.
  • Ability to compile, organize and use information and make independent decisions or judgments.
  • Ability to work independently in the area of molecular biology.
  • Ability to work in a group environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, study sponsors, and other scientists.
  • Ability to provide guidance and consultation to resolve issues in area of responsibility.
  • Ability to prepare protocols and reports.

 
Hiring Range: (Commensurate with education and experience)
Lab Research Assistant $44,500 – $50,000
Lab Research Specialist $55,500 – $65,000
