Summary of Job Duties:

This Nurse Educator works under the direction of the IDHI Stroke Program Director of Operations and is responsible to translate and provide leadership in the area of evidenced based care of acute ischemic stroke patients to hospital emergency department staff and pre-hospital agencies. Leadership in pre-hospital and emergency care of stroke patients to national, regional, and state level associations, agencies and committees, the AR Stroke Task force, individual EMS agencies, and out-of-state peers is required.

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree Nursing plus five (5) years experience as an educator/instructor or RN.
  • Plus three (3) years of Emergency or Critical Care experience plus , two (2) years leadership (charge nurse, nurse management or other leadership experience) 2 years Paramedic
  • Must maintain dual license as RN and Paramedic.
  • Must have a full understanding of EMS levels of practice and the AR EMS System of care. 
  • Requires overnight travel 2-3 days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree Nursing plus five (5) years RN, 3+ years Emergency or Critical Care, 2+ years leadership (charge nurse, nurse management or other leadership experience) 5+ years Paramedic
  • Must maintain dual license as RN and Paramedic.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains IDHI Stroke Program training and clinical protocols keeping all current with best practices. Continually evaluates the IDHI Stroke Program to address identified deficiencies/learning needs within program hospitals, telemedicine facilities and EMS services. Understands and assures the use of appropriate IDHI Stroke Program clinical education initiatives and imparts this knowledge to hospital faculty/staff across Arkansas as appropriate.

  • Identifies barriers or concerns which interfere with the learning process and suggest alternatives for resolution. Develops curriculum to align with all levels of EMS scope of practice (unlicensed First Responder; EM Responder; EM Technician; Advanced EMT; Paramedic) in the assessment, management, and care of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. Understands and assures the use of appropriate clinical education and tailors the skill-based education/training as appropriate under the Arkansas Department of Health EMS Rules and Regulations Develops process for quality improvement of the care of stroke patients from the first medical contact (EMS) to treatment within the ED to hospital admission.

  • Maintains IDHI Stroke Program training and clinical protocols keeping all current with best practices. Continually evaluates the IDHI Stroke Program to address identified deficiencies/learning needs within program hospitals and telemedicine facilities.

  • Conducts quality reviews of live tele-stroke consult calls and monthly mocks and provides feedback to the Nurse Facilitator for areas of improvement with the NIHSS assessment and the administration of thrombolytics.

  •  Collaborates with hospital Emergency Department (ED) providers to integrate EMS within their health care team.

  • Participates in outreach activities for the IDHI Stroke Program and projects and is responsible for site visits with assigned hospitals to review AHA AIS treatment time targets and identify opportunities for improvement within that facility/EMS. Hospital site visits will include a review of all contract deliverables.

  •  Other duties as assigned.
