Job description:

Motivation/Background

The automotive sector has been related to the emission of various pollutants. While the reduction of the CO2 emissions is addressed by the improvement of the engine efficiency, the conversion of other gaseous pollutants such as CH4, ammonia and formaldehyde to less harmful and more environmentally friendly gases is handled by the catalytic converter. Even though a lot of efforts have been done in this area, the application of stricter regulations leads to the demand of a breakthrough in the design of the catalytic converter. Furthermore, the complexity of the catalytic system and its dynamic character in terms of structural modifications under various conditions necessitates the in-depth understanding of the catalytic system from the atomic level.

Description of Work

The focus of this research lies in the elementary-step mechanism of CH4, ammonia and formaldehyde oxidation over noble metal-based catalysts (Pt/Pd). Of particular interest is the effect of the dynamic structural changes as a function of reaction conditions and reacting atmosphere on the activity of the active site(s), i.e. the kinetics. For the goal to be achieved, (newly) developed DFT-based microkinetic models are implemented in a dynamic model which accounts for various nanoparticle sizes/shapes. The dynamic model(s) will be coupled with numerical simulations tool to allow simulations of different reactor scales (lab scale reactors to full scale catalytic converters).
