Description of the workplace

The post doc position is placed at the division of Combustion Physics. The aerosol research group at combustion physics conducts research on atmospheric aerosol particles and their impact on climate and air quality. This research involves aerosol in-situ measurements, satellite measurements, process modelling and global modelling. The research group is part of the strategic research area MERGE (https://www.merge.lu.se ) that work with climate modelling. Aerosol research has been conducted at Lund University since the 1970-ies and Aerosols is now a profile are at LTH (https://www.lth.se/english/research/profile-areas/aerosols/ ).  

Combustion physics has approximately 70 employees and is located in the Enoch Thulin-laboratory at the Physics Department. The division actively work to create a friendly working environment and has well-being group that arrange board game nights, excursions, and other activities. 

The post doc position is part of a Horizon Europe project with 19 partners from different parts of Europe. The project is aimed at reducing uncertainties regarding aerosol-cloud-climate interactions. The project will utilise data from lab, field, and satellite measurements as well as process models and global climate models. The focus for Lund University in the project is to work with marine aerosol impact on clouds and climate and how these are represented in a global climate model.  

Subject description

The subject of the position is aerosol particles and how these impact clouds and climate. 

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development. 

You will be working with evaluating and developing the emissions of aerosol and pre-cursor gases from the ocean in the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). The tasks will include assessing current parameterisations in the model related to these emissions and determining methods to improve them. This work will involve evaluating the aerosol load in the model using different observational datasets. The model development will in a later stage of the project be used to estimate the effective radiative forcing from aerosols and to investigate climate feedbacks related to marine aerosol emissions. You will mainly work with programming and running simulations with NorESM on a high-performance computing centre. Work tasks also include writing scientific publications related to this research. You are expected to attend project meetings within the Horizon project and present results and scientific conferences.    

Qualification requirements 

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • good knowledge in programming
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • god knowledge about aerosols and clouds 

Assessment criteria 

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills. 

Other qualifications:

  • prior experience in developing climate models
  • experience in working in Linux based operating systems and work at hpc centres
  • knowledge in Fortran and Python programming
  • experience in working with NorESM
  • prior work with aerosols emissions from the ocean
  • you are independent, have good collaboration skills, likes to take initiatives and are well structured

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years (with a possibility for an extension for one more year). The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
