Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the French Unit, Meetings Coverage Section, Coverage and Media Services Branch of the News and Media Division in the Department of Global Communications. Overall guidance is provided by the Chief of Section, and direct supervision by a Senior Editor. The Meetings Coverage Section produces press release summaries, in English and French, of official meetings and other United Nations events at Headquarters and abroad.
This position is temporarily available effective as soon as possible for an initial period of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension.
Within delegated authority, the Press Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Covering meetings of the General Assembly and its Main Committees, as well as the Security Council, Economic and Social Council and other bodies of the United Nations, as a member of a two-person coverage team that produces a speaker-by-speaker account of the meeting topped by a lead that summarizes the proceedings and highlights the most newsworthy aspects.
• Covering such meetings alone, occasionally, when such single coverage is decided upon by an editor; the selected candidate must be able to take statements from the floor by listening to a speaker and summarizing what is being said while the meeting is in progress.
• Covering select press conferences and summarizing them, highlighting the most newsworthy elements.
• Researching, summarizing and preparing, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, press releases and background material on specific topics or themes.
• Travel to cover major UN conferences and meetings away from Headquarters.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Professionalism: Ability to cover meetings of the General Assembly, Security Council and other United Nations bodies, and produce a clear, concise, accurate speaker-by-speaker account(s) of meetings. Ability to create a lead, summarize the meeting and highlight the most newsworthy elements. Possess sensitive understanding of a wide-range of political issues and how United Nations writing about such issues must be perceived by all sides as fair and objective. Ability to research and analyze complex international issues and quickly grasp their essentials. Ability to meet daily news deadlines and work well under stress. Shows pride in work and in achievements. Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns. Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, international relations or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public relations or a related area is required.
Experience in working at the international level is required.
Experience in the UN system or similar international organizations is desirable.
Experience covering and summarizing intergovernmental meetings is desirable.
Experience in web publication and content management systems is desirable.
Experience producing content for social media platforms is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in French and English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
• This position is temporarily available effective as soon as possible for an initial period of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

United Nations Considerations
