Background

Background/Context

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Jordan’s women’s labour force participation rate is around 14%, which is considered as one of the lowest labour force participation rates in the world in a country that is not in a conflict. The adverse impact of this reality has multilayered effects. Historically, the government of Jordan has recognized in its national frameworks the need to address this challenge, most recently in the Economic Modernization Vision, which set a national target to double the current women’s labour force participation rate by 2033. All stakeholders including the government, private sector, civil society organizations including employees’ and employers’ associations and experts agree that increasing women’s labour force participation in the private sector is key to meet this target.

UN Women Jordan Country Office supports the Government of Jordan in achieving its national goals and targets and has reflected this commitment into its Strategic Note for the period 2023- 2027 by enhancing the private sector’s capacity to integrate gender equality in its work and to promote and support women’s entrepreneurship, labor force participation and economic empowerment through its value chain. Mainly through collaborating with the private sector to reform and introduce and institutionalize measurements that support gender equality and women’s empowerment and ensure it is captured, documented and shared. One of the primary vehicles for that is the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a primary vehicle for corporate delivery on gender equality dimensions of the 2030 agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Private Sector Engagement Analyst Consultant will work in close collaboration with the programme and operations team, UN Women HQ personnel, Government officials, multi and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation under portfolio.
