Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

    • Facilitating or assisting with the Organic Farmer Training Program from 9-5pm on Mondays from February to November
      • Field Trip Days – Safely driving a van from Detroit to farms in 5 Michigan regions and Chicago
      • Hands-on Learning Days
        • Partnering with Keep Growing Detroit’s OFTP instructors to ensure that Detroit hands-on days offer unique learning opportunities each week
        • Supporting learner needs for 20-minute breaks in AM and PM, 1-hour lunch, accommodations, precautions for extreme heat, etc.
        • Taking attendance and managing daily class evaluations
        • Updating Katie Brandt on weekly attendance, participant learning needs and concerns from Detroit; collaborating on positive solutions where needed 
        • Driving van to East Lansing for 2 hands-on learning days at the MSU Student Organic Farm     
      • Online Days –
        • Managing chat, breakout rooms, links and google docs/sheets/slides and other technology while the OFTP instructor is leading online peer-to-peer learning activities
        • Where comfortable, leading or co-leading some online activities, especially those focused on urban, non-profit and educational farms & gardens
    • Weekly meetings before each class, (preferably on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Friday mornings) to discuss and finalize plans and schedule for learning activities 

Desired Qualifications

    • Required:
      • excitement about teaching urban farming methods through peer-to-peer learning activities
      • ability to facilitate inclusive, positive learning experiences for OFTP participants from diverse backgrounds
      • must have a valid drivers’ license and good driving record. If driving an Enterprise vehicle, must be over 25 years old and meet other requirements for the rental company
      • capable with online teaching technology or willing to learn about zoom, the online learning platform, google docs/sheets/slides, etc.
      • ability to collaborate positively with OFTP instructors   
    • Preferred:
      • experience managing an urban farm, schoolyard garden or non-profit farm
      • skills or experience with sustainable or organic farming, business planning, marketing farm products, beginning farmer resources and addressing issues of inequality in local food systems
      • familiarity with the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program
