Professorship (W2) in Atmosphere Optical Sounding

We are looking for an outstanding scientist in the field of optical sounding of the atmosphere. Emphasis should be on research of the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere and on the operation and development of lidars and the exploitation of lidar observations of this region. The appointee will head the department “Optical Sounding and Sounding Rockets” at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP). The appointee is also expected to carry out scientific cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Rostock, in particular with the Institute of Physics, to participate in collaborative projects, and to contribute to activities of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of the University.
In teaching, the professorship is expected to contribute to the Master’s degree program of the Institute of Physics in the area of “Physics of the Ocean, Atmosphere and Space” through lecturing and supervising Bachelor, Master and PhD students.

Qualifications are as per § 58 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LHG M-V): completed university studies, doctoral degree, post-doctoral thesis (“Habilitation”), teaching experience or equivalent qualifications, usually earned within the context of junior professorship.

A special focus is placed on academic achievement and teaching qualifications as well scientific organization and academic administration. For this reason, candidates should describe previous teaching results, ideas regarding future teaching (including didactic lesson planning) and their prior experience in academic and scientific management.

In addition, candidates are expected to have experience and interest in developing programs that can attract and maintain external funding.

The appointment is made according to the Berlin Model. In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professorship will be filled by a lifetime civil servant or, if necessary, by a temporary civil servant for a period of 5 years. It is also possible to fill the position as a regular state employee. The position holder will carry out their scientific work at IAP in Kühlungsborn.
