About the Role


You will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Research strategy for The Lancet. You will be mentoring, managing, and overseeing other editorial staff’s input into the journal, and advising on the Research content of the other journals in The Lancet’s portfolio.

You should be able to run the journal in the absence of the Editor and Deputy Editor. This includes leading all internal meetings, making decisions on and taking responsibility for the content, managing internal issues, and responding to external questions, press queries, and contacts.




  • Mentoring Executive and Senior Editors on peer review of Research, and for direct line management of Senior Editors as required.

  • Managing a substantial peer-review workload, as well as contributing to the commissioning and writing components of the journal

  • Leading on Series, Commissions, and other commissioned content, writing Editorials for the journal and contributing to the leader-writing team in all respects

  • Creating successful partnerships with and between external clinicians and researchers to advance science-based advocacy beyond publication

  • Helping make The Lancet family the most important catalyst for better health through Series, partnership activities, conferences, and Commissions

  • Making decisions about the journals’ policies and strategic directions, represent the journal within Elsevier and externally as required, and take a strategic role in journal expansion plans




  • Have a degree in medicine and research experience in a clinical setting, or a PhD and research experience are required

  • Have substantial in-depth and broad editorial experience

  • Be experienced in leading teams internally and externally

  • Have great critical appraisal skills of clinical research with extensive clinical and research knowledge

  • Be an assured communicator, skilled at debating with, and leading groups of authors and key international clinical leaders

  • Have the ability to think strategically, influence decisions, and strive for continuing improvement
