Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer to be based in Rocky Hill, CT. In this role, the ideal candidate will act as a Structures Design Lead for pursuits and projects. The individual will have overall responsibility for all structural aspects of these projects and inter-discipline coordination of all technical issues with other discipline leads from initial design through technical support during the construction phase. This position is an opportunity to work within a well-established and very successful group that offers a diverse range of projects, technical challenges and career development opportunities.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all structural engineering technical aspects of pursuits and projects with other disciplines and in support of the Project/Design Manager.

  • Ensure the structural design is completed in accordance with the contract guidelines and design documents.

  • Establish structural scope, work plan and work schedule in support of the Project Manager.

  • Lead all elements of conceptual, preliminary and detailed final design of new bridges

  • Comply with company’s safety awareness program and policies.

  • Manage groups of engineers, designers and/or specialists towards development of structural design documents and contract deliverables with minimal guidance or supervision.

  • Assure conformance with contractual obligations by ensuring that design documents are reviewed and approved prior to release to the client.

  • Train, mentor and develop staff and support career growth opportunities for staff.

  • Support marketing coordination and proposal preparation. Participate in proposal interviews.

  • Ensure that QA/QC procedures are being implemented and ensure the technical quality of deliverables. Lead responses to client’s comments on structural design elements of the deliverables.

  • Anticipate potential budget and schedule impacts and initiate plans for alternative actions.

  • Incorporate innovation in design and delivery.

Examples of some of the projects we have worked on in this group include:

CTDOT Project 102-295 Replacement of I-95 over Saugatuck Avenue, Westport, CT:

  • The bridge carrying I-95 over Saugatuck Avenue was replaced utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction methods (ie. lateral slide). The new superstructures were constructed on temporary supports adjacent to the existing structure. The new abutments were constructed under the end spans of the existing bridge with limited vertical clearance. Over two separate weekend closures this past Fall, the preconstructed spans were slid into place, creating minimal disruption to I-95 traffic given the scale of the project.

CTDOT Project 135-301 MNR over Atlantic Street, Stamford, CT:

  • The bridge carrying five (5) active Metro-North tracks was replaced using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods. The existing crossing was lengthened to accommodate a significant horizontal widening and vertical realignment of Atlantic Street. This award-winning project, successfully completed in 2020, included offsite superstructure prefabrication with movement to prepared substructures using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT’s).

CTDOT Project 126-170 Commodore Hull Bridge Painting and Steel Repairs, Derby/Shelton, CT:

  • The existing bridge comprised of twelve (12) steel girder approach spans and three (3) steel truss main spans was modeled using Midas Civil software. The complex 3D finite element model was used to support the as-inspected and as-repaired load ratings, develop steel repairs to the truss members, analyze gusset plate connections and provide timely support during construction.

Ongoing projects:

Currently the Rocky Hill, CT structures group is working on multiple major railroad bridge replacement projects along the Metro-North corridor.
