The incumbent will act as the lead in ensuring that the image and brand of the Faculty of Forestry are optimized on all digital platforms and assets. They will oversee the development, design, and content maintenance on multiple high-profile digital properties including external and internal websites, applications, software tools and digital graphic design. The incumbent works collaboratively to conceptualize original design and web solutions to bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex systems.
The incumbent will develop and maintain software tools and automated processes for the UBC Faculty of Forestry educational technology and infrastructure, delivering teaching technology programming support, as well as serving as an escalation point for more complex technical web requests and issues in the Faculty. Helps to arrange appropriate web programming solutions to meet the Faculty’s needs.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing and works closely with the Faculty’s IT Director and the Teaching and Learning Team and Marketing Team; as well as staff and faculty in academic program units, in order to realize the technical requirements of strategic web-based initiatives in these areas.
Web Development and Digital Design
- Leads web design strategies and project planning overseeing the development and content maintenance of all external and internal websites at the Faculty
- Consults with key stakeholders and partners to determine creative web and digital design solutions
- Ensures web and digital design aligns with branding and design standards established by the Faculty’s Graphic Design, Publications and Illustrations Coordinator
- Creates wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to communicate interaction and web design ideas
- Heads up all testing and improvements to the design and functionality of Faculty websites
- Ensuring website function and stability across devices i.e. desktop, mobile, tablet
- Drives SEO and keyword best practices in content creation and content programming
- Finds solutions to increase free traffic to the site through the optimization of website pages
- Directs changes to website architecture, content, linking, and other factors to improve SEO positions for target keywords
- Creates compelling UX approaches, UI solutions, interaction behaviors, and design systems by establishing a vision through efficient design and user-flows
- Optimizes sites for maximum speed and scalability
- Manages and leads all aspects of the Faculty’s digital graphic design for clients within the Faculty
- Leads in the design of creative marketing campaign assets including but not limited to: digital ads, digital signage, banners, and social media posts
- Plans and creates design projects including the creation of original vector illustrations, manipulation of digital images and design/layouts.
- Manages relationships with external service providers, such as creative and digital agencies
- Presents and defend designs and key deliverables to peers and senior management
- Establishes, promotes, and educates colleagues on digital design guidelines, best practices, and standards to ensure a thorough understanding of brand consistency across all digital platforms and assets
- Provides education, training, consultation, and hands-on support to end-users of digital communications websites, templates, and services (CMS, brand assets, internal operations tools)
- Leads the development of manuals and reporting templates to keep team documentation current and accurate
- Makes recommendations on the purchase of tools to aid in the improvement of the design and/or performance of Faculty websites
- Designs, develops and maintains software tools and web applications to advance the mission and operation of the Faculty;
- Develop and maintain the digital teaching resources for courses and academic programs (Canvas API advancement, interactive applications such as mobile apps, cloud-based server, AI adaptive learning tools, etc);
- Develop virtual reality/augmented reality programming assets and tools,
- Designs and conducts testing and debugging of web applications for functionality including testing the solution at different resolutions, Macs, PCs, Mobiles, ensuring the sites function and meet current web standards;
- Plans, reviews, analyzes technical requirements, develops and implements websites and web-based application plugins and extensions according to architecture and guidance
- Identifies any web issues and facilitates resolution by working with the appropriate web stakeholders
- Creates databases linked to websites and web applications
- Integrates web apps and sites with UBC enterprise systems, including Identity Management, Student Information and Enterprise Data Integration;
- programming/development methodologies and researches and recommends best practices;
- Serves as an escalation point for more complex technical web requests and issues
- Performs other related duties as required
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with donors, staff, suppliers, students, alumni and faculty. May need to balance multiple projects with competing deadlines and make decisions on how best to manage the work given, based on the timeframe, the relative strategic importance of the projects and the impact of failing to meet deadlines. The quality of the digital assets developed and managed has a profound influence on the public’s opinion of the Faculty of Forestry. The production and distribution of inaccurate, inconsistent or ineffective information could have a significant detrimental effect on the Faculty’s ability to compete for research funding, reputation with alumni, to attract and steward donors, and the Faculty’s ability to attract the best graduate and undergraduate students possible.
Works under the broad direction of the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, and daily direction of the Forestry IT Director. Receives minimal direction on objectives and must be able to lead projects and develop procedures for completion to meet critical deadlines.
The position may be required to supervise Work Learn or Co-op students working in this area. May provide mentorship to the Web Specialist.
This position works in a normal office environment in the Forest Sciences Centre. Hybrid working arrangements that include some remote work days is possible.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Five years experience in a relevant discipline, preferably in a large complex organization or equivalent combination of experience and education. Have the ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a dynamic team environment. Willingness to learn and flexibility to adjust to changing priorities.
- Expert working knowledge of WordPress, with experience in Drupel an asset.
- Expert working knowledge of graphic design software including Adobe CC suite: Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator or other visual design and wire-framing tools, ideally for large complex organizations
- Experience working with Google Analytics, SEO, UX, and UI research tools and platforms.
- Familiar with programming languages and frameworks commonly used in Web Development, such as Python, JQuery, CSS, .NET and HTML, and Integrated development environment (IDE)
- Strong knowledge of code repositories.
- Frameworks such as Swift, AngularJS, jQuery, node.js
- SQL Server, MySQL and other DB experience
- Writing SQL queries
- Leveraging Web Services to build cross-application and cross-platform integrations a plus.
- Administer a hosted web farm and Cloud Solutions
- Executing test scripts and building test harnesses
- Website security and user account management
- SDLC and application lifecycle management
- IT service management tools such as, Service Now and JIRA
- Proven work experience as a Web Designer developing new and maintaining existing websites
- Demonstratable graphic design skills with a strong portfolio
- Experience in assessing, configuring, and maintaining open-source CMS plugins/modules is a definite asset
- Knowledge of web accessibility and web standards (WCAG, W3C)
- Knowledge of BC FIPPA and cybersecurity best practices
- Knowledge of Google Analytics, UX and UI best practices; able to configure, analyze, and report website metrics to ensure performance targets are met
- Experience working in an Agile development process is an asset
- Excellent service-oriented communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to impart technical information to audiences with mixed levels of ability
- Demonstrated organizational skills in project and time management, with an ability to work
- under pressure to meet multiple deadlines
- Demonstrated willingness to learn and continually upgrade skills
- Knowledge of the University and internal working groups would be a definite asset
