Description The Social Media Specialist manages UNE’s institutional social media feeds to engage the University’s key audiences and enhance our visibility and reputation across multiple social platforms. The Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and manages social media feeds in alignment with Communications and Marketing goals.
The Specialist creates content individually, gathers user-generated content, and works in partnership with Marketing and Communications colleagues to produce more complex posts. Content will incorporate photos, video, text, graphics, and interactivity, and posts should feel authentic, engaging, and native to each social channel— while supporting UNE’s core identity.
The Specialist manages institutional organic social feeds on such channels as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, while mentoring University departments that produce additional feeds. Priority audiences include current students and their parents, prospective students, alumni, community and business partners, media, and others.
  • Promote brand awareness of the University through the implementation of an organic social media strategy that supports our overall Communications and Marketing strategy.
  • Work under the supervision of the Communications Director and in collaboration with specialists in the Office of Communications and Marketing.
  • Establish measurable goals and objectives for organic social media.
  • Individually seek out, plan, create and post original content that supports the social media objectives of UNE and builds meaningful connections with our diverse constituencies.
  • Activate and collaborate with Marketing and Communications colleagues in the development of complex, higher-end social media posts and campaigns.
  • Coordinate with Marketing colleagues to align with the paid social media advertising that they produce and distribute.
  • Monitor social channels to manage audience outreach and address policy violations.
  • Consult with colleagues to ensure consistency in voice.
  • Stay aware of social media trends as well as changing technologies and tools.
  • Maintain University-wide social media best practices and policies.
  • Train and support individuals and departments representing UNE in the social media space.
  • Communicate the University’s overarching social media strategy and assist departments in integrating with that strategy.
  • Maximize integration between institutional social media channels and other University communications vehicles (e.g., magazine, PR, website).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, or closely related field or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired.

  • Demonstrated experience in social media implementation and measurement with in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective audiences (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Snapchat, etc.) and how they can be deployed in different scenarios.
  • Examples of advanced social media writing.
  • Examples of advanced photography.
  • Examples of videography that exhibits shooting and editing skills appropriate for current social media channels.
  • Examples of basic graphic design for social media posts.
  • Ability to self-manage and activate/manage others to accomplish tasks.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours when activities fall outside normal working hours.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make instant judgments based on sound PR, marketing, and communications best practice.
  • Experience in using data to drive strategic social media decisions.
  • Experience in, or strong knowledge of, the field of Higher Education is preferred.
