Job Summary

The Prahl Lab is seeking a highly motivated Staff Research Associate to work as part of a research collaboration investigating the immune response to vaccination including SARS-CoV-2 in early childhood/pregnancy cohort.

Duties in San Francisco will include performance of cellular immunology assays, mostly based on flow cytometry (Cytek Aurora spectral flow cytometer, FACS ARIA cell sorter, and LSRII cytometers) or ELISpot, development and validation of new flow panels and assays, data management, as well as using software to analyze high parameter flow data.

Additionally, evaluation of humoral immune responses including ELISA and multiplex bead assays. The candidate will be expected to process human blood and saliva samples including PBMC separation and cryopreservation. They will also assist in a biorepository of human specimens and will help with storage and location management for the Prahl lab and many collaborations. May assist with developing with new procedures to apply these assays to hypothesis-driven research projects.

In addition, the candidate may be expected to train new lab members in basic skills of PBMC separation and cryopreservation, saliva, and breast milk processing and basic immunology techniques. The research associate will help to apply these assays to hypothesis-driven research projects, working closely with postdoctoral fellows and other senior lab members while receiving additional direct mentorship from the PI.
The purpose of this position is to perform cellular and humoral immunology assays on human blood samples from clinical research studies currently in ongoing early childhood/pregnancy cohorts evaluating responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination. The Staff Research Associate will be primarily located in San Francisco, California. This position will focus on the support of grant-funded research projects in San Francisco and collaborations across the Bay Area. The successful candidate will possess exemplary communication and organization skills.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine. The department is comprised of 19 divisions employing over 400 faculty, 83 fellows, 84 residents, 31 Post Docs and non faculty academics and 170 staff. Required Qualifications

SRA I

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge/experience performing sterile tissue culture and cellular/immunology/molecular techniques
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and organizational skills with meticulous record keeping
  • Ability to handle sensitive clinical information appropriately
  • Ability to work with human specimens
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including ability to work with a team and in a self-directed manner, meet deadlines, communicate issues, train others
  • Ability to perform calculations related to preparing media and solutions, planning and interpreting experiments
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills
  • Knowledge of various cell culture procedures and advanced laboratory techniques, such as: cell-based assays using Elispot and Flow Cytometry-based platforms, molecular techniques, and others
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision as well as with team
  • Ability to adapt and use good judgment when making decisions
  • Ability to work with and train staff of wide range of educational backgrounds
  • Ability to prioritize work and delegate responsibility and tasks appropriately
  • Excellent communication and organization skills

SRA II: In addition to above

  • BA/BS degree in biology or a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience with immunology, including flow cytometry/mass cytometry
  • Sterile tissue culture ability and experience, preferably with human samples
  • Familiarity with laboratory software programs including FlowJo, Stata, Excel, R programming software
  • Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends as required by experimental protocols
