The North York Moors National Park Authority helps look after one of the most highly regarded
landscapes of the British Isles. The North York Moors is a unique area with a rich diversity of
landscape and ecosystems including over 31,000 hectares of woodland. A significant proportion
of this is commercial plantation forestry but about 20% is recorded as either ancient woodland
or plantation on ancient woodland site. In addition, it contains one of the highest
concentrations of veteran trees in Northern England.

The Authority employs about 170 staff across a wide range of activities and our dedicated
woodland team of 6 sit within the Conservation & Climate Change department. We are looking
for a Tree and Woodland Officer to join our committed team and help us to increase the value of
trees and woodland in the National Park.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with experience of both statutory tree
protection work and woodland management to help deliver our long standing commitment to
conserve and enhance the treescapes of the North York Moors. You would be supported by our
experienced woodland team, and by other specialists from across the Authority.

The Role

As the Tree and Woodland Officer, you will be responsible for delivering the Authority’s
statutory tree functions and advising our planning department on tree and woodland matters.

You will also be developing woodland management projects with landowners, primarily in the
northern part of the National Park, to improve and enhance the visual appearance and
conservation value of existing woodlands.

Additionally, your role will involve:

  • Advising the public, staff and partners on tree and woodland matters
  • Establishing good working relationships with landowners, agents and partner organisations as
    well as forestry and arboricultural advisors
  • Liaising with relevant statutory bodies, contractors and other parties to ensure projects are
    implemented successfully, on budget and on time

About You

To be considered as the Tree and Woodland Officer, you will need:

  • Good arboricultural knowledge and an understanding of relevant legislation and standards
  • Knowledge and experience of managing existing woodlands
  •  Experience of working with landowners, land agents, foresters, and contractors
  •  A basic understanding of land management, including farming, forestry and sporting
  •  To be educated to degree level or equivalent in an appropriate subject such as arboriculture,
    forestry, ecology or rural land management or have at least 5 years’ relevant experience in an
    appropriate field

We appreciate that this role covers the two separate, albeit overlapping disciplines of
arboriculture and forestry. Therefore, we encourage applications from highly motivated

prepared to develop their skillset to cover both aspects of the role.
