Job Overview

The Division of Student Affairs provides programs and services that promote and enhance student learning and development. The Vice President for Student Affairs will galvanize campus leadership, faculty and stakeholders to imagine, develop and sustain a vibrant student experience rooted in the university’s Catholic and Jesuit values and practices and student-faculty engagement, drawing from the breadth and resources of a globally prominent research university. The VPSA provides leadership and guides staff across a constellation of offices promoting seamless student support and helping shape a culture of belonging and engagement across the university.

The next Vice President for Student Affairs will provide visionary leadership on a series of complex issues. These include:

▪ Developing and advancing an inclusive and unifying strategic vision for Student Affairs at Georgetown

▪ Attending to the work of formation by drawing on the strength of Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit


▪ Embracing the challenges and opportunities inherent in an undergraduate and graduate student

population with changing needs related to mental health and well-being

▪ Promoting diversity, equity and inclusion

▪ Developing ongoing resources and opportunities for the benefit of undergraduate and graduate


▪ Investing in the growth and development of an outstanding team

Leading an administrative infrastructure that will support institutional priorities appropriate to a global

research university

▪ Activating philanthropic priorities

▪ Managing and communicating complex student affairs issues

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The VPSA is the senior leader in Student Affairs, reporting directly to President John J. DeGioia. The VPSA bears responsibility for a student affairs team and services that support students at seven (soon to be eight) of the university’s schools: Georgetown College, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, McCourt School of Public Policy, McDonough School of Business, School of Continuing Studies, School of Nursing and Health Studies (soon to be two separate schools), and Walsh School of Foreign Service, along with the campus in Doha, Qatar, which offers the bachelor of science in foreign service degree, executive Master’s and non-degree training. The Vice President for Student Affairs oversees 19 offices and approximately 120 staff members, supporting both undergraduate and graduate students.

Requirements and Qualifications

Doctorate required. Extensive professional experience in Student Affairs or a closely related field within higher education. Experience supervising professional staff, and counseling/advising/support skills at a sophisticated level. Mature judgment in extremely complex interpersonal, behavioral, and mental health situations. Ability to make presentations in public to a range of audiences, and to interact with colleagues, students, parents, board members, and community leaders in an effective and polished manner. Familiarity with and comfort promoting the University’s distinctive Catholic and Jesuit mission and identity. Strong awareness of federal and local laws and guidance governing student conduct, Title IX compliance, and general legal/compliance issues in student affairs.
