The British Embassy in Tashkent is part of a world-wide diplomatic network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Embassy is now looking for a new Foreman, Technical Works Assistant, to assist the Corporate Services Team. The jobholder will oversee the planned preventative maintenance and technical works, to be carried out on the estate, including offices, grounds and our residential properties, whilst ensuring compliance with healthy and safety standards. 

Main purpose of job:

Responsible for the day-to-day management of the maintenance team and working with them, to provide general maintenance services to the Embassy, Ambassador’s Residence and our housing estate.  Support the procurement of maintenance services and goods, ensuring value for money.  Monitor and manage maintenance staff to ensure good working practices are followed and all health and safety processes are followed, including when using equipment and when delivering services. 

Roles and responsibilities (Core duties):

  • Monitoring and delivering work maintenance requests;
  • General duties include overseeing a small team of handy men to ensure they deliver: maintenance of equipment (power generators, HVAC), decorating, plumbing services, electrical checks and repairs, carpentry, appliance installation and repairs etc.; 
  • Responsible for delivering on the preventative maintenance schedule and for undertaking any minor repairs at the Embassy, and staff residences;  
  • Flagging and reporting to the Estates Manager any actual or potential maintenance problems, issues and or damages;
  • Supervise third party contractors working at the Embassy, monitoring completion of work, and ensuring service level requirements are met in accordance with relevant agreements;
  • Coordinate the day-to-day work requests and management of the works team.
  • Maintain an inventory of our technical equipment (including tools and spare parts); advise on acquiring new or replacing old equipment;
  • Manage the Gardener’s work schedule;

Logistics & Services:

  • Liaising with UK and regional colleagues on the delivery of goods for maintenance work and supporting logistics around their visit;
  • Ensure timely and regular delivery of drinking water to staff houses.


  • Help to research and identify suppliers for goods and services connected to the estate;

Resources managed: 

  • Management of two S2 grade maintenance staff

  • Written and spoken fluency in English, Russian and Uzbek (minimum of B1 level according to CEFR*)    
  • Valid local driver’s ID (B, categories)
  • Good IT Skills
  • Good communication skills 
  • Excellent time management skills 
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks 
  • Pass a competency-based driving test set by the British Embassy 
  • Previous responsive maintenance background and minimum three (3) years of experience in the maintenance support work


  • Related technical qualification in a specialist area e.g. electrician, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical engineering
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols
  • Experience in facilities, building or estates management

This is a full-time, permanent contract of 40 hours gross per week, Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:00, based at the British Embassy located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Learning and development opportunities exist with exposure to the: FCDO Programme Management courses and FCDO International Development L&D curriculum. 

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
