The British Embassy in Copenhagen is recruiting a self-driven, creative and delivery-focused individual with public diplomacy and/or communications experience to deliver the Embassy’s public diplomacy work, a key priority for the UK Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. 

The British Embassy Copenhagen is part of a world-wide network representing UK’s political, economic and consular interests overseas.

Why should you apply?

You will join the Political Team as Public Diplomacy Officer leading on a high-priority area of the Embassy’s outreach and external engagement. The Political Section covers Foreign, Security and Climate Policy as well as Public Diplomacy. You will be part of a high performing team that enjoys a strong reputation for the quality of its communications, events, reporting, analysis and influencing.

You will work directly to the Ambassador and Head of the Communications, Public Diplomacy and Climate Team to organise and deliver a variety set-piece events and coordinate content for digital platforms and campaigns. You will play a central role in strengthening the Embassy’s influence to the Danish government, public and wider civil society to promote the close and long-standing relationship between the UK and Denmark. You will deliver across a variety of public diplomacy themes, based on:

  • the UK Government’s foreign policy priorities;
  • key annual events such as the King’s Birthday Party;
  • public diplomacy events and activities spanning the wider work of the Embassy e.g. Trade, Science and Tech, Security and Defence, Diversity and Inclusion, Climate and Energy.

We are looking for an individual that is experienced in public diplomacy and/or communications who can hit the ground running on arrival; is confident setting direction and demonstrating leadership; has strong collaboration skills and can work effectively as part of a team; and is confident working with senior colleagues internally and a range of contacts externally.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Lead the delivery of the Embassy’s public diplomacy strategy. You will set direction, working across the Embassy to identify opportunities and ensure delivery of the Ambassador’s priorities.
  • Manage the design, development and delivery of set-piece public diplomacy events (e.g. King’s Birthday Party, International Women’s Day). You will develop creative and engaging content and visuals (both digital and physical promotional material) to support public diplomacy activity.
  • Identify opportunities to support the promotion of the UK’s policy objectives through soft power, regularly applying innovation to soft power and policy campaigns set by Central Teams in London.
  • You will build relationships across the Embassy, with Public Diplomacy and Comms Teams across the Europe Network and with key partner organisations, such as the British Council.
  • You will lead active collaboration with the wider Political Section to grow the Embassy’s sphere of influence with a range of different audiences. 
  • Support the development of a Communications Officer who you will line manage (and who will also be new to the role).

What will you bring to the role?

We expect that you have the following competencies and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field (i.e. politics, international diplomacy or media and communications);
  • Experience of developing and delivering successful public communication or public diplomacy or events and campaigns;
  • B2 level Danish and excellent C1 English communication skills;
  • Use of applications such as Canva for the purpose of video editing and creating visual branding
  • Proven ability to lead and set clear direction;
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.

It would be good to have (desirable):

  • Previous experience of line management;
  • Budget management.
