Position description

The Youth Programs Manager will spearhead the formulation and implementation of CABI’s youth engagement strategy. He/She will coordinate and be responsible for conceptualization and implementation of CABI’s youth programs while supporting colleagues to integrate youth engagement in other programs. He/She will also contribute to project development endeavors in the region, in alignment with CABI’s strategy, country and donor needs and opportunities. Reporting to the CABI’s Senior Global Director, Development Communications and Extension, this role will work closely with project and programme staff to increase engagement with the youth in actions designed to improve their economic well-being.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Identify, establish and maintain a network of like-minded youth-focused implementing and development partners within the national, regional and international development community. This should particularly be focused on addressing youth unemployment, under employment and youth economic empowerment within the agriculture and environment sectors.

  • Project and program development, management and implementation;
  • Identify, recommend and design successful youth programs, using human centred design principles, while ensuring that these are aligned with CABI’s medium-term strategy, member country priorities, donor requirements and expectations;
  • Support fund-raising and proposal development, leading where appropriate;
  • Manage and supervise CABI’s youth programs in agriculture that involve, among other things, providing youth with skills training in technical and non-technical areas including leadership, entrepreneurship and workforce readiness along with mentorship with a view to increasing employment opportunities and engagement with enterprises willing to employ young women and men;
  • Embody values and understand the future challenges and opportunities for youth empowerment and is passionate about creating an impact in the employment ecosystem;
  • Demonstrable experience in successful design and implementation of youth economic empowerment programs;
  • Computer literacy required, fluent with MS packages.

Monitoring and evaluation

  • Conduct need assessments to enhance CABI’s understanding of youth employment opportunities related to agriculture. You will use the information gathered to inform design of youth projects and programs;
  • Identify and record best practice and lessons learned to drive continual improvement within youth related projects;
  • Liaise with the Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation team and Gender Coordinator to ensure effective formulation of youth-related indicators and development of relevant data collection tools;
  • Integrate tools to assess level of youth engagement in project implementation (e.g. the youth programming assessment tool) to support youth focused analysis, planning and project management.

Visibility and representation

  • Promote visibility for CABI’s programs through a variety of strategies and continuously demonstrate CABI’s engagement with the youth;
  • Represent CABI in relevant forums aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of the youth nationally and in the regions where CABI works.

ABOUT YOU

Experience

  • The appointed candidate will have extensive experience (5-10 years) at senior level in youth programs conceptualization, design and development, implementation and business development;
  • Experience in youth programming in agriculture and the environment will be an added advantage;
  • Experience working for a governmental organisation, international organisation, or NGO, that has worked with large institutional donors. Private sector experience will be an added advantage.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Embody values and understand the future challenges and opportunities for youth empowerment and is passionate about creating an impact in the employment ecosystem;
  • Demonstrable experience in successful design and implementation of youth economic empowerment programs;
  • Computer literacy required, fluent with MS packages.

Education & Qualifications

  • At least a master’s level degree in social sciences, behavioural change science, business or a relevant field;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English required. Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.
