Reference number: P610/24

for the winter term 2023/24. If the general requirements under civil service law are met, civil servant status is granted for life.

The professorship is in the field of retail and logistics management with a focus on (digital) retail management, omni-channel/unified commerce, modern retail systems, platform economics/platform strategies, retail analytics, business analytics and/or e-commerce/social commerce/voice commerce. Ideally, the focus should be on sustainability in retailing, in particular the sustainable design of (global) value/supply chains, innovative business models and innovations in retailing and logistics. Key topics here are services, sharing economy, coopetition, supply chain management with a particular focus on distribution networks, retail logistics and, in particular, last mile logistics as well as urban logistics.

In addition to the mentioned domain-specific expertise, the candidate should have extensive methodological skills. This includes expertise in data/text/process mining, big data analytics or the application of AI methods. Sound programming skills, particularly in Python, Java or R, are desirable, as is experience in the field of computational decision support. The ideal candidate also has an interest in and experience with quantitative methods such as optimization, simulation, decision theory or game theory and is experienced in dealing with uncertainties in planning and optimization.

The professorship should represent and develop the field of retail and logistics management in research and teaching as well as contribute to the international academic profile of the faculty. Disciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation as well as contributions to the further development of relevant groups in research, teaching and transfer are of major importance. The focus of the professorship opens up a wide range of opportunities for collaboration—within the Faculty of Business Studies and Economics (such as at the markstones Institute) and within the entire university (such as with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Faculty of Production Engineering and in the context of the Research and Transfer Focus Area Logistics/Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics). Participation in relevant research projects of the faculty and the university as well as initiatives for the acquisition of research-oriented third-party funding are expected.

The Faculty of Business Studies and Economics is committed to providing good study conditions through high-quality teaching. The candidate’s responsibilities include offering courses with a teaching load of 9 LVS per semester in the core Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs as well as the cooperative degree programs of the faculty (in particular Management and Production Engineering). The candidate is expected to contribute to the further development of the faculty’s existing degree programs, in particular by designing and offering modules in the profile areas of General Management and Logistics as well as Marketing of the faculty’s new Bachelor’s degree program in Business Studies (BPO 2023). The ability to offer courses in German or English, as well as the willingness to undergo further training in higher education and to participate in the academic self-administration of the faculty are expected.

A pronounced willingness to intensively promote doctoral and early career researchers of the faculty is also a prerequisite. In particular, active participation in the Diginomics Research Group is considered an essential contribution.

To be considered for the professorship, the faculty expects publications in top-tier journals, relevant teaching experience and initial success with third-party funding.

Applicants are required to hold a university degree with a relevant focus, a PhD degree in their respective fields, further scientific achievements in the field to warrant the appointment as professor (such as a higher doctorate, successful evaluations at the assistant professor stage or a substantial publication record), pedagogical aptitude and didactical engagement. The appointment follows the regulations of §§ 18 and 18a BremHG as well as §116 BremBG.

The University of Bremen strives to increase the proportion of women in the academic field. It has received several awards in programmes to promote gender equality and is certified as a family-friendly university. Women academics are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications from persons with a migration background as well as international applications are expressly welcomed. Severely disabled applicants will be given priority if their professional and personal qualifications are essentially the same.
