The British Embassy in Belgium is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a highly motivated Assistant to Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer for His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
Who are we?
His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is the UK’s tax and customs administration and is responsible for collecting tax revenue on behalf of the UK government, making sure that money is available to fund the UK’s public services. HMRC is also charged with closing the tax gap and reducing tax avoidance and evasion. HMRC’s Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) Network is responsible for facilitating international co-operation with host countries in support of these priorities.
Main purpose of job:
The main purpose of the FCLO Assistant role is to support the FCLO in maintaining and strengthening HMRC’s relationship with customs and law enforcement agencies in Belgium and Luxembourg. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working at the forefront of the fight against international organised crime, gathering intelligence and ultimately protecting the UK revenue from tobacco and alcohol smuggling, VAT fraud, money laundering, strategic exports offences and other fiscal crimes.
Roles and responsibilities:
- The main purpose of the job of the Assistant to the HMRC Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) is supporting and assisting in achieving their objectives as set by HMRC, and in maintaining and strengthening the relationship between host agencies and HMRC. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working at the forefront of the fight against international organised crime, gathering intelligence and ultimately protecting the UK revenue from tobacco and alcohol smuggling, VAT fraud, money laundering and other fiscal crimes;
- The FCLO Assistant will work under the supervision of the HMRC FCLO and will be expected to assist with the day-to-day office management, including analysing intelligence and complex data sets, responding to UK and host case team enquiries and fulfilling legal requirements relating to criminal casework and disclosure requests;
- The jobholder will need to demonstrate excellent organisation skills with a practical approach to multi-tasking and high attention to detail;
- The successful candidate will also provide essential administrative and logistical support to the FCLO;
- There is also the opportunity to engage with multilateral organisations including the World Customs Organisation and OLAF, the European Anti-Fraud Agency.
This is an exciting and challenging role, which will enable the jobholder to develop an understanding of HMRC strategic priorities on fiscal crime and how we are working to promote them within country through international collaboration and diplomacy.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- Previous experience in administrative and support roles;
- Previous experience working with senior clients/managers;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in dealing with senior figures within the Law enforcement environment;
- Attention to detail in written communication;
- Ability to process and understand large amounts of data and information; turning this into concise and accurate reports;
- Ability to respect the confidentiality of work issues and understands the personal and professional consequences of lapses in security;
- Knowledge of the various government institutions in Belgium, especially law enforcement;
- A flexible approach to work and travel; this may occasionally include travel at short notice, working away from home, working weekends and on public holidays;
- Excellent IT skills – advanced skills in Microsoft Office;
- Constructive, positive and service orientated attitude.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
Nice to have:
- Fluent in French and/or Dutch would be an advantage;
- Full, clean driving licence;
- Experience of working in an area with a high level of personal responsibility and has a track record of being accountable for own actions/decisions.

Other benefits and conditions of employment
This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.
The monthly gross salary for this position is € 5,269.98 (EO) level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
