Duration: Summer 2024 (May 27, 2024 – August 2, 2024, with possible extension to August 16)

Location: Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument

Hours per Week: 15-25 hours per week. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

Pay rate/Reimbursement: $20/hour plus mileage reimbursement at Federal rate

Description:

The Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument seeks to hire two Summer Interpretive Rangers to provide interpretive services to visitors in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument (CSNM). These services include, but are not limited to the following: Developing and leading daylong programs for 6-12 year olds once a week for 7-8 weeks, planning and leading interpretive hikes for adults to ecologically and culturally significant areas in the CSNM, participating in hands-on stewardship events, and staffing the CSNM Visitor Information Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and lead a weekly daylong outdoor education program (Nature Camp Monument Days) for groups of up to 15 children.
  • Prepare and lead interpretive hikes to various locations in the CSNM for groups of up to 20 adults.
  • Staff the CSNM Visitor Information Center, treating each guest with respect and courtesy, and providing accurate information to visitors from a wide variety of age and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ensure that the CSNM Visitor Information Center is clean, organized, and stocked with brochures.
  • When appropriate, assist with other Friends events and programs such as: Hike & Learns and information booths at community events.

Job Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfort developing and leading outdoor environmental education programs for adults and youth
  • Knowledge of local area and resources
  • Attention to detail
  • Professional appearance and preparedness
  • Friendly attitude and customer service experience
  • Wilderness First Aid & CPR or First Aid & CPR certification or ability to be certified before June 15, 2024
  • Must have a car or access to a car for transportation to CSNM
  • Familiarity with the CSNM is desirable

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough, uneven surfaces, up steep inclines while carrying gear. Work will primarily be outdoors and will occur across many types of physical terrain and during all types of weather and possibly moderately smoky conditions.
