Seeking a seasonal intern to assist with invasive species prevention activities during the summer of 2024. This is a great opportunity to learn how to coordinate and engage volunteers around solving environmental challenges in Rhode Island.

What You’ll Do
As an intern for NEIWPCC, you’ll work alongside full-time staff to assist with the implementation of a community-based habitat restoration project focused on the removal of water chestnut in the Blackstone and Ten Mile Watersheds. You will:

  • Coordinate water chestnut pulling events by recruiting and training volunteers, tracking volunteer data, and maintaining materials and supplies. 
  • Produce informational materials and develop social media posts for the project, and act as a liaison between state and municipal partners.
  • Assist with permitting requirements.

What You Bring
The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will be a high school graduate with 1-2 years of college education in biology, environmental science, chemistry, or related natural science field. Experience coordinating volunteers and working with diverse communities, as well as excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills are needed. Experience with canoeing, kayaking, or light watercraft is desirable. Some understanding of Spanish preferable. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors, able to swim, and physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. Applicants with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent. 

Logistics
The anticipated hourly payrate for this position starts at $18.25. This is a seasonal NEIWPCC internship based out of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management office located in Providence, RI. Duties will be performed in office and outdoor field settings, with need for local and regional travel to participate in related meetings and events in a variety of outdoor conditions. This intern will be expected to work 35 hours per week, with some flexibility. This internship is anticipated to begin late May or early June and will extend into August. Occasional weekend and evening work is anticipated to oversee events in June and July. This position is not eligible for telework. A valid driver’s license and access to own transportation is required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.
