Teatown Lake Reservation, the largest community supported, non-profit environmental education center in Westchester County, New York is seeking a Wildflower Island Curator is charged with stewarding the treasure of Teatown, our two-acre Wildflower Island native plant refugium, and overseeing a robust volunteer group who assist in maintenance and education on the Island. This position requires an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and public-spirited person who will further Teatown’s mission to inspire our community to lifelong environmental stewardship. Ideal candidates must have a background in horticulture, volunteer management, and excellent communication skills.

Position Summary: The Wildflower Island Curator is tasked with coordinating and executing care of Wildflower Island and Wildflower Woods across departments, overseeing a volunteer program, and forging connections in the broader native plant community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate hands-on, engaging, culturally relevant natural science and environmental educational experiences on or about Wildflower Island for diverse populations.
  • Manage the unique habitat of Wildflower Island and Wildflower Woods in consultation with the Science and Stewardship departments.
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteer Wildflower Island Guides.
  • Serve as crew leader for volunteers and staff executing horticultural special projects across the preserve.
  • Maintain and upkeep supplies, equipment, tools, etc.
  • Responsible for various other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Expertise in native flora and best practices regarding their care, propagation, and management.
  • Experience recruiting, onboarding, coordinating, and retaining volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of the natural sciences and willingness to work on expanding this knowledge.
  • Ability to work with people of all backgrounds.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in keeping digital and physical records.
  • Ability to work independently, self-starter.

This is a part-time position with a fixed stipend. The schedule is set at the mutual discretion of the Curator and Director of Education. Weekend work required. This position will be performed in person and on-site at Teatown Lake Reservation.
