Massaro Community Farm (MCF) seeks a full time Summer Camp Coordinator/Lead Educator for our 2024 Youth Summer Camp Program. The Coordinator will oversee and coordinate all programming, provide leadership for the Summer Camp Counselors, and fill in as a Counselor as needed. Our summer camp takes place from June 24-August 2, but this position would begin sooner, with part-time hours beginning as early as the first week of May, 2024, and would extend through the week of August 5.
About Massaro Community Farm: Massaro Community Farm (MCF) is a nonprofit certified organic farm in Woodbridge, CT. Our mission is to Keep Farming, Feed People and Build Community. We fulfill this mission by growing produce and offering it to the community through seasonal CSA subscriptions, at farmers markets, to local restaurants and producers; through our farm-based education programs offered for youth and adults; and through holding on-farm community events throughout the year. We donate at least 10% of our harvest to hunger relief agencies, which averages ~6,500 pounds of produce annually.
Position Summary: MCF has been hosting educational programs for all ages since 2012, including a half day summer camp program. In 2021, we transitioned to offering a full-day summer camp program. This summer, we will host 20-45 students each week for children aged 5-9; students are typically divided into groups by age. The Coordinator will supervise all Counselors as well as ensure that all programs are running smoothly by providing assistance, oversight, and communication across the entire program.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development of camp curriculum and activities
- Lead Staff Training during the week of June 17, 2024, along with the Summer Camp Administrator
- Directly supervise 4-8 Summer Camp Counselors and Counselors in Training
- Ensure that Counselors have planned and prepared for their daily activities and help provide ideas as needed
- Fill in for Counselors and as needed
- Lead camp activities as needed
- Coordinate all daily programmatic activities, such as helping to set up for guest programming or staging areas as requested by the Counselors
- Set weekly roster of campers, based on registration
- Greet parents and ensure proper check-in and check-out of campers each day
- Maintain daily first aid logs and properly administer campers’ medications
- Communicate with the Summer Camp Administrator and Farm Director about any problems or issues as needed
- Liaison with Farm Staff to ensure that spaces in the Barn and other communal areas of the farm are being shared well
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous direct experience working with children in an instructional program, preferably in an outdoor setting
- Previous experience developing or planning activities, games, or educational curriculum for children
- Ability to work with children between the ages of 5-9 from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
- Interest and curiosity in farming, forestry, agroecology, or gardening
- Comfortability working around farm animals, (chickens, goats, rabbits, pigs)
- Comfortability working outside in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Positive and clear communication skills
- Creative problem solving skills and flexibility
- Organized and proactive
- Ability to pass a background check
- Fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous leadership experience at a summer camp or comparable setting
- Current First Aid/CPR certification (training can be provided if not current)
- Current certification to administer topical and oral medication (training can be provided if not current)
Work Details:
- This is an hourly position with a pay rate of $18-20/hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
- The Coordinator will work 40-45 hours per week from June 24-August 2, with an anticipated schedule of 7:45am-4pm. Part-time hours can begin as early as May 13. At least 30 hours of work is required for the week of June 17 during staff training.
- The Summer Camp Program Coordinator reports directly to the Farm Director.
- All work will take place on the farm at 41 Ford Road, Woodbridge, CT 06525
