The Media and Public Information Officer develops and coordinates multifaceted communication campaigns with a special emphasis on issues and events which highlight the significant contribution of the IAEA in ensuring universal access to the benefits of nuclear energy in a safe and secure environment. The incumbent also assists, when required, meet the daily and often unexpected demands of the media, seeking internal guidance on inquiries and responding, arranging interviews and accompanying visiting journalists. In addition, he/she is OPIC’s main focal point for organizing in-house briefings requested by Member States, international organizations and NGOs.
Role:
- The Media and Public Information Officer is: (1) a project manager, planning and coordinating strategic communication projects and briefings; (2) a media expert, working with journalists and expanding relevant media contacts to raise awareness of IAEA’s contribution to peaceful use of nuclear technology; (3) a producer of written and other materials for dissemination through the internet, traditional media and social media.
Functions / Key Results Expected:
- Interact with journalists and expand media contacts to increase global awareness and media coverage of the IAEA’s activities, and of its role in non-proliferation and in increasing access to nuclear peaceful uses while improving the safety and security of nuclear facilities.
- Devise and implement media coverage of Agency events and activities, working with external consultants or agencies as well as traditional and non-traditional partners if appropriate, to help raise the profile of events which highlight the significant contribution of the IAEA.
- Coordinate and contribute material to a wide variety of multimedia packages, as well as web and print products for use in communication and public information coverage of events and activities.
- Under the direct guidance of Director, OPIC, develop and manage Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) projects to identify the current IAEA and nuclear quantitative and qualitive narratives base lines for targeted audiences, as well as define impact objectives with relevant measurement indicators and tools. Provide technical direction and supervise the interns working on the project. Identify and review public opinion and press, trends, and propose ideas to improve communication strategy.
Qualifications, Experience and Language skills:
- University degree in communication/journalism, international relations, political science or an appropriate scientific subject.
- Minimum of five years practical working experience in journalism or media relations/public information, preferably in an international context.
- Experience in reporting global and nuclear issues, preferably for multicultural audiences.
- Previous experience in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) projects in the context of International Organization is an asset.
- Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
