The Non-Motorized Trails Program is searching for a dedicated and hands-on individual to become an integral part of our team as a Seasonal Idaho City Yurts Ranger with a primary focus on yurt and trail maintenance, complemented by other essential duties including inventory management and administrative assistance.

As a seasonal Idaho City Yurt Ranger, you will have the opportunity to maintain and improve a highly valued recreational resource – the Idaho City Yurts and surrounding non-motorized trails network. In this dynamic role, you will primarily focus on essential maintenance tasks, ensuring that the yurts and trails remain accessible for winter and summer users. In addition to maintenance, you will be responsible for conducting inventories, providing information to the public, and promoting the Idaho City Yurts and trails.

Example of duties:

Idaho City Yurt Maintenance (40%)

  • Restocks, cleans, and repairs each yurt in accordance with the Yurt Maintenance Checklist to ensure resource preservation and visitor safety
  • Performs a variety of basic craft activities to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry
  • Conducts and maintains an inventory of supplies at each yurt
  • Assesses the condition of each yurt and documents maintenance needs
  • Repairs each yurt as skills and training allow
  • Cuts, delivers, splits, and stacks firewood for each yurt
  • Ensures water tanks are full at each yurt
  • Operates power tools including chainsaws and brush cutters
  • Utilizes hand tools including shovels, pulaskis, axes, and saws
  • Interacts with and leads volunteers
  • Prioritizes safety
  • Provides information to yurt and trail system visitors

Trail Maintenance (40%)

  • Maintains the trail system surrounding the yurts in accordance with Forest Service guidelines
  • Participates in and leads volunteer trail work weekends
  • Assesses and maintains trail system signage

Operations (10%)

  • Conducts an inventory of shop equipment
  • Cleans and maintains program equipment
  • Cleans and maintains program vehicles
  • Suggests operational improvements

Administrative (10%)

  • Provides information in person, via email, and phone
  • Prepares reports of yurt and trail conditions
  • Generates content for social media
  • Promotes the Idaho City Yurt and trail system through public outreach events
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Pay

$17/hour

Location

This position is based out of Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation’s Boise office but will operate primarily at the Idaho City Yurts, 45 minutes northeast of Idaho City.

Housing

No housing is provided.

Length of Employment

Full Time (40 hours/week)

Total season hours: 21 weeks (840 hours) May through September

Minimum Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age. This position requires you to have or obtain a valid driver’s license.

This position will involve working evenings, weekends, and holidays in all weather conditions. It involves lifting items weighing 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders. This position requires you to have or obtain a First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Ability to think critically, manage time, problem solve, operate independently and on a team, communicate clearly, work hard, and demonstrate strong attention to detail
  • Some knowledge of outdoor recreation and/or natural resource management, gained either personally or professionally. 
  • Experience providing service to a variety of customers.

A background check administered by the Department may be required.

  • Experience operating and maintaining vehicles/equipment. 
  • Experience performing trail and facility maintenance.
