The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. UNHCR leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. UNHCR works in collaboration with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other international partners to provide humanitarian assistance, advocate for refugees’ rights, and find durable solutions for displaced populations.

UNHCR’s core functions include ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees, advocating for their rights, ensuring access to rights and services and facilitating durable solutions.

The intern will be placed within the Protection Unit and under the overall guidance of the Associate Protection Officer the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support with day-to-day tasks by providing clerical and administrative support in the unit,
  • Assist in data and file management.
  • Assist the Protection Unit with logistical support for training programs.  
  • Provide support to the unit in categorizing information.
  • Support the team with translations (Turkish/English) as needed
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Graduated or under-graduated student in social sciences or any other related fields.
  • Strong interest in working in a refugee context.
  • Advance user of MS Office (MS Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and Turkish
  • Previous work experience will be relevant.
  • Pro-activeness, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage stress efficiently.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment. 

Minimum qualifications required:

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
