Who are we?
The UK Mission to the United Nations (UN) & World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at the international organisations in Geneva. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join us for an internship within the Disarmament team. The UK Mission in Geneva prioritises dignity and respect at work. Roles and responsibilities:
- Attending and reporting on meetings of the Conference on Disarmament, other major disarmament treaties and other events on disarmament, arms control and related issues.
- Monitoring the disarmament debate in academic and NGO publications and online, bringing interesting and relevant contributions to the attention of the team and carrying out small research projects on relevant issues.
- Providing general administrative and logistical support to the Disarmament team, including by monitoring the disarmament general inbox, organising side events, liaising with the Press and Public Affairs team.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Fluent written and spoken English (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- General interest in international relations, the multilateral system and / or disarmament and arms control issues;
- Currently enrolled or recent graduate;
- Experience in research obtained within the studies or within prior work / internship experience;
- Very good reporting skills;
- A good team player, with the ability to build strong relationships with a diverse range of people in a professional context;
- Excellent organisational skills;
- An open, co-operative attitude;
- IT literacy.

Nice to have:
- Some academic or previous work experience of disarmament or related issues;
- Some level of French would be helpful, but it is perfectly possible to do the job without it.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,450 CHF. Please note that interns will need to arrange and pay for their own travel and accommodation, as well as any other living costs and are subject to Swiss taxes. This internship will be for a period of 11 months.
All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland.
United Kingdom, European Union and EFTA nationals do not require visa sponsorship along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican.
Where applicable, we encourage successful applicants (if from Europe or the UK) to obtain an Insurance Card (EHIC or GHIC) prior to entering Switzerland.
The Mission offers a contribution to the payment of travel insurance for the duration of internship, in place of Private Swiss Health Insurance that includes health & accident cover for all interns.
The final appointment and commencement of internship will be dependent upon successful security clearance.
Learning & Development:
The UK Mission Geneva attaches great importance to the learning and development of its staff, with both formal and informal training and development opportunities available for all employees, in line with a personalised development plan. This learning and development offer is facilitated by the Mission’s L&D Committee, and supported by the L&D Champion.
The internship as a whole will be a learning and development opportunity for the successful candidate, giving them a chance to experience life in a busy multilateral mission and to delve deep into the political and technical issues involved in disarmament negotiations. Continuous on-the-job training, guidance and feedback will be provided by the line manager and other team members. Internship objectives will be agreed between the intern and line manager at the start of the internship, with regular evaluations of progress.
The intern will be required to complete some mandatory online training courses, and will be encouraged to complete additional online training courses when work requirements allow. They will also have access to formal learning opportunities available on the intranet, as well as other sources of training offered to the wider Mission. In addition, interns will have access to a limited L&D fund to help support their development needs in the role.
As well as observing and reporting on debates and negotiations, shadowing experienced members of staff at meetings, and generally participating in the life of the Mission, the intern will have the opportunity to establish relationships with members of the disarmament community in Geneva and to talk to visiting officials from London about their work.
