The Dutchess Land Conservancy (DLC), Dutchess County, New York, is seeking a full-time Stewardship Manager, based at our Millbrook, NY office, to be part of our collaborative team of land conservation professionals. The Stewardship Manager is responsible for working with us to meet our annual stewardship goals.

Responsibilities consist of managing and/or assisting with all aspects of our stewardship program including extensive fieldwork, monitoring conservation easement and fee properties, preparing baseline documentation reports, supervising Stewardship Associates and Interns, and managing GIS data. The position comes with opportunities for advancement.  Specific Responsibilities Conservation Easement and Fee Land Stewardship

  • Organize and oversee the annual stewardship of existing conservation easements and fee properties, walking and hiking properties over a variety of terrain, and documenting observations in writing and photographs.
  • Prepare baseline reports for new easements, including written reports, photographs, and GIS maps.
  • Supervise stewardship associates and interns.
  • Serve as a point of first contact with landowners (and others) inquiring about conservation easement properties and assist the Vice President for Conservation and Stewardship in responding to requests.
  • Oversee management of the stewardship database and maintain stewardship records in an organized and efficient manner per DLC’s recordkeeping policies.
  • Manage and assist with remote monitoring of properties through the review of satellite and orthographic imagery.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • Create maps for site visits, easement monitoring, and baseline documentation reports.
  • Update GIS data based on monitoring observations, and document structures and other changes.
  • Oversee the DLC’s use of monitoring technologies such as ArcGIS Online.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist staff with outreach and education events, writing articles, and other items as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a variety of people.
  • Adept at using computer programs including Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, databases, and iPads in the field.
  • Competent in navigating and using maps and GPS units, and mathematical skills to determine building sizes.
  • Ability and willingness to walk up to several miles per day on rugged terrain.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to complete tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as appropriate to the job responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to supervise others.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with land trust work, conservation easements and use of ArcGIS mapping software.
  • Bachelor’s degrees in an environmental field such as biology, ecology, planning, or landscape architecture.
  • Interest in observing, identifying and documenting landscape features.
  • A genuine interest and enthusiasm for land conservation.
