The British Embassy in Madrid, Spain, is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are looking to recruit a Senior Trade and Investment Adviser – Energy, to promote UK companies in the energy sector in Spain, and support Spanish energy sector investment in the UK, encouraging expansion and maintaining regular engagement with key companies.
The Senior Trade and Investment Adviser – Energy will lead Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Clean Growth Campaign in Spain, promoting UK strengths in Spain and presenting the UK opportunity in the priority subsectors of renewables including offshore wind, smart networks and cities, and sustainable consumption.
Reporting to the Director of DBT Madrid based in the British Embassy in Madrid, the role involves working with DBT colleagues in the wider Spain network, in the UK and Europe.
This is a fixed term temporary role.
Main Responsibilities:
- Deliver the key activities planned for the renewable energy sector in the DBT Spain Country Business Plan 2024-25, during the period of the contract;
- Support UK business in the energy and clean growth sectors in Spain. Engage with new UK exporters and account manage those with a Spanish presence to support their expansion. Identify new leads and explore opportunities in energy subsectors with specific focus on wind, solar, hydrogen and energy networks;
- Identify and support new and existing Spanish investors in the UK energy sector. Manage key account relationships at senior level with major Spanish corporate investors, as well as smaller Spanish investors in the UK in order to identify expansion opportunities;
- Work alongside Europe colleagues to organise regional events and participate in sectoral business forums;
- Engage with senior business leaders in the energy sector and prepare briefings/speeches in English or Spanish for the British Ambassador and other senior government officials prior to meetings and sectoral events;
- Work closely with stakeholders in the energy sector on market access issues arising from the EU-UK Trade and Co-operation Agreement and actively approach them to identify and resolve barriers.

- Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish, including excellent written skills (C1 Level);
- At least 2 years’ experience with a successful track record in international trade, investment, or business development;
- Knowledge of the energy sector, with a particular focus on renewable energies, in the UK and/or Spain;
- Proven ability to manage high-quality delivery advice to companies in a fast-moving environment;
- Experience in working at pace and independently, and prioritising within an often heavy workload;
- Successful experience in building and maintaining effective networks and working relationships at senior business levels;
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, and ability to work collaboratively with business contacts, Spain network, and colleagues in the UK;
- A sound knowledge of the business environment in Spain and the UK;
- Excellent organisational, IT, administrative, and public presentation skills.

This is a full-time 6-month contract. Normal working hours are 37.5 per week. The British Embassy Madrid supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering.
The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
