Job Description

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 27,000 refugees from 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees. 

SCOPE OF YOUTH FUTURES PROGRAM INTERN WORK: The Youth Futures Program addresses the specific social and academic needs of refugee and asylee youth at Clarkston High School through an after-school program and summer camp. Centered on both academic support and social-emotional learning, the after-school program assists students with their daily homework and school projects, fostering not only academic excellence but also nurturing essential social and emotional skills. This position is an unpaid internship and requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week for at least two months. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Youth Futures Summer Programs for middle school and high school refugee and immigrant youth — Ready, Set, Excel! and Ready Set, College! — are held 3 days per week, 6 hours per day, in person.   

  • Support IRC staff with program delivery 
  • Help with logistics for activities, field trips, and workshops 
  • Engage with students to provide an enriching and supportive academic and social environment 
  • Provide other program and general administrative support as needed, such as documentation and file maintenance 

Qualifications
Requirements

  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • An interest in international and refugee issues. 
  • Commitment to upholding ethical standards and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects. 
  • Strong desire to help people, and enthusiasm and sensitivity for working in a multi-cultural setting. 
  • Willingness to work 1:1 with students to reinforce math, science, and English literacy skills.
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with educational support and systems is preferred. 

This is an in-person role, but the intern is not required to have a car, and the placement site is accessible by public transit. 
This role will report to the Youth Futures Coordinator.
