Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building non-governmental organization (NGO). Global Rights was founded in Washington DC, USA in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group and changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 at its 25th anniversary. Global Rights works with local activists in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations. We provide technical assistance and training to enable local partners document and expose human rights abuses, conduct community outreach and mobilization, advocate for legal and policy reform, and provide legal and paralegal services.

Key Responsibilities:
The Program Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the development and implementation of climate change and equitable resource governance as well as business and human rights initiatives. The jobholder will partner with civil society organizations and extractive host communities to strengthen their engagement and demand accountability in the extractive industry, prevent and monitor human rights violations, and design and implement advocacy strategies with various stakeholders. Additionally, the Program Officer will focus on facilitating collaboration among private, government, media, and civil society stakeholders to promote healthy business practices that uphold human dignity, prevent government overreach, and ensure effective regulation to protect citizens’ interests. The individual in this role will assist with:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Development and Implementation:
    • Support the design, planning, and execution of climate change, extractive/equitable resource governance, and business & human rights programs and initiatives.
    • Conduct research and analysis on human rights and resource governance issues.
    • Overseeing preparation, submission and evaluation of regular work plans and activity reports, and providing expert technical assistance and mentoring to partners’ daily activities
  2. Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Facilitate collaboration among private sector entities, government agencies, media, and civil society to promote healthy business practices and protect human rights.
    • Advocate for effective government regulation to prevent government overreach and ensure the protection of citizens’ interests.
  3. Capacity Building:
    • Develop and deliver capacity-building initiatives for civil society organizations and extractive host communities to engage effectively in advocacy and accountability efforts.
    • Collaborate with Executive Director/supervisor to elaborate strategic planning and design annual work plans based on assessments and partner consultations to build the capacity of grassroots organizations to promote and advocate human rights in Nigeria.
    • Provide training and technical support to partner NGOs in project states to enhance skills in documenting human rights violations and abuses.
  4. Overseeing preparation, submission and evaluation of regular work plans and activity reports, and providing expert technical assistance and mentoring to partners’ daily activities.
  5. Providing the Communications Unit with content for social media and other external communication platforms.
  6. Collaborating with Executive Director/supervisor to administer and monitor sub-grant programs to partner organizations.
  7. Representing Global Rights at meetings and forums as assigned by the Executive Director/supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human rights, international development, environmental studies, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in program management, advocacy, or community development, preferably with a focus on climate change, extractive industries, and business and human rights.
  • Strong understanding of human rights principles, climate change impacts, and equitable resource governance issues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural settings and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to promoting social justice, environmental sustainability, and human rights.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
