Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/lSIL in Iraq and the Levant (UNITAD) and will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL [Da’esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL [Da’esh) in Iraq.
Responsibilities
The Information Systems Forensic Investigation Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Forensic Science Officer (P4) and will perform the following tasks:
- Performs forensic analyses on digital evidence (mobile phones, laptops, desktops, external hard disks, electronic documents, files and other data storage devices and/or materials and networks on the open, deep, dark web) electronic documents and files such as photographs and videos for enhancement and face/voice detection.
- Produces and submits high quality written forensic reports in relation to the aforementioned analyses in accordance international standards.
- Collects, packages, preserves, handles, and stores digital evidentiary material in line with relevant policies, procedures and SoPs.
- Assists in the drafting and updating of forensic operating procedures [SoPs), best practice manuals, guidelines and forms.
- Assists in the design, development and delivery of training and capacity building initiatives for Iraqi authorities and UNITAD in the area of forensic acquisition and analysis of data storage devices, electronic documents and files such as photographs and videos.
- Assists in the preparation and conduct of field-based assessments and missions to collect and preserve data from data storage devices, including the preparation of forensic equipment, hardware, software and consumables.
- Contributes to the identification and the re-supply of forensic digital equipment, hardware, software and forensic consumables to maintain a high throughput digital forensics laboratory.
- Performs other duties as required.
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in digital forensics, computer forensics and cybersecurity, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job – Specific Qualification
- Certification in open-source investigations or digital forensics is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible work experience in digital forensics investigations/examinations at the national and/or international level is required. Relevant experience in battlefield acquisitions and analysis using x-Ways; FTK; Magnet; Cellebrite and Maltego or equivalent software applications is required. Experience with Relativity and Nuix or equivalent eDiscovery systems and applications is required. Experience with Oxygen Forensic Detective is required. Work experience in setting LIMS software is required. Work experience in the provision of subject matter expertise training and capacity building initiatives is required. Experience in working with Python language to parse and analyses collected data is desirable.
Experience with documents using right-to-left script and information retrieval techniques for Arabic is desirable. Work experience in digital forensics investigations in relation to ISIL (Da’esh) is desirable. Work experience in digital forensics or open-source investigations in the Middle East and North Africa region is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
