Job Description

Job Overview: The English Language Training (ELT) and Vocational English Language Training (VELT) Instructor is responsible for providing integrated English language instruction to non-native English speakers. The ELT/VELT Instructor successfully tailors’ curriculum and materials to meet the needs of students enrolled in the program, supports overall program administration by conducting student recruitment, registration, and attendance tracking, and supports student retention, progress, and assessment efforts. The ELT/VELT Instructor also implements an engaging, effective VELT curriculum that supports refugee acquisition of English language skills that support employability. The ELT/VELT Instructor will work closely with the Adult Education Specialist and the Employment Caseworker to ensure that clients achieve goals and objectives.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Deliver integrated ELT instruction:

  • Receive client referrals and conduct initial client assessments.
  • Perform comprehensive assessment on each student to established quality assurance including pre-tests and post- tests.
  • Plan, prepare, maintain, and update curricula and lesson plans for mixed-level classes to meet the English Language Training needs of students. Integrated ELT combines English language lessons with basic communication, job skills, digital literacy skills, and other life skills.
  • Tune lesson activities to meet student needs across a range of English proficiency levels, from pre-literate to high intermediate levels of speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing.
  • Utilize and oversee community volunteers as classroom assistants, managing the delivery of lesson plan activities through assistant-led breakout groups.
  • Complete all necessary documentation to ensure compliance with funding requirements, licensing requirements, and agency quality assurance standards.
  • Evaluate clients’ English language skills to evaluate progress.
  • Compile data, perform data entry, and assemble information for comprehensive reports or forms.
  • Document attendance and student progress.
  • Document student progress with goal setting and attendance and assist in recruitment and retention activities.

Deliver VELT program:

  • Develop lesson plans and materials in collaboration with the Adult Education Coordinator.
  • Follow established policies and procedures in gathering and recording classroom attendance, clients’ completion, and other data required by a grant funder.
  • Coordinate with the Adult Education Coordinator, Resettlement Case workers, Employment Specialists, Wilson-Fish Case workers and other relevant staff through regular communication, participation in team meetings, and other activities as requested.
  • Administer English language assessments to measure and track student progress and gains.
  • Maintain open, professional, and effective communication with Adult Education Coordinator.  
  • Report regularly on program goals, client attendance, learning activities, student progress, and any problems or concerns with clients or the program.
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Instruction of classes in-person and online. 
  • Manage and provide attendance data reports to community partners as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, or related field; graduate degree preferred but not required. 
  • English language instruction certification required. 

Work Experience:

  • Experience teaching ESL; 2+ years ESL teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience working with immigrant populations and adults strongly preferred.
  • Experience with workforce and job training programs preferred.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong written and oral English language skills.
  • TESOL certification strongly preferred
  • On-line instruction/learning experience preferred.
  • Proven cultural competency and sensitivity to working with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Able to maintain accurate and timely data records of student enrollment and participation.
  • Able to take initiative and work independently to resolve challenges.
  • Able to bring creativity to the classroom to teach to audiences with varied levels of English.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and willing to work in a team environment.

Working Environment: 

  • Standard office environment
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget.  Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
