Impact of the organisation and the impact you will have in this role

The Head of Principal Gifts presents an opportunity to develop the strategy and lead on the establishment of a principal gift program that will drive support for life-changing health programs aligned with the organisations’ 25 Year Vision. This person will focus on creating and expanding philanthropic networks and nurturing relationships with ultra-high-net-worth individuals and foundations who are capable of contributions upwards of $1 million, and who are committed to making a significant impact on the health of Australians through philanthropic support.

We are searching for an experienced and collaborative major gifts professional who understands that the value of teamwork is vital to the success of a fundraising program. Supported by an inspiring and experienced leader, the Head of Principal Gifts will also work closely with the Head of Philanthropy who will share a peer role. This collaborative partnership will ensure a cohesive approach to donor engagement and will be critical to the success of the philanthropy program and national large-scale research and healthcare initiatives. This person will also work in close collaboration with the CEO, senior leadership team and Board to lead the success of the transformational gifts journey for each donor and the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the strategic plan establishing a principal gifts program, with a focus on identifying new networks and building relationships with prospective donors
  • Establish, cultivate and engage new networks of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and other potential donors who are aligned with the organisations mission and values
  • Manage the full cycle of the donor journey from prospect scoping and initial research through to making the ask and securing agreements
  • Raise funds for new health initiatives which will harness innovative ideas and national partnerships from investors that want to be a part of a national movement towards improved health
  • Facilitate and coordinate meetings between prospective donors and key stakeholders, including senior leadership, board members, and program staff, to showcase the impact of philanthropic investments on national health-based programs and research
  • Build and manage a robust pipeline of prospective donors and identify specific areas of interest for each to develop funding proposals and compelling cases for support relevant to specific areas of interest
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Philanthropy, and coordinate efforts and ensure alignment between philanthropic strategies, leveraging each other’s strengths and resources to maximise outcomes and ensure a positive experience for each donor throughout their philanthropic journey
  • Build impactful working relationships across the organisation to unlock large-scale opportunities for philanthropic support
  • Provide accurate budget reporting and forecasting, working within allocated expenditure
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, ethical standards, and best practices in philanthropy, maintaining the highest level of integrity and transparency in all fundraising activities

Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience and success securing financial support from high-net-worth individuals and/or foundations resulting in six and seven figure gifts
  • Strong experience in relationship management and proven success in high-value income generation in a not-for-profit or education focused environment, with strong knowledge of Australia’s high-net-worth individuals, families, and trusts and foundations
  • Demonstrated strengths in data analysis skills with the ability to research, profile, and qualify prospects, and to develop and implement moves management plans
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and grow relationships at all levels internally and externally
  • A collaborative approach, and proven success working with others internally to unlock large-scale fundraising opportunities
  • Excellent high-level communication and influencing skills with experience collaborating with others to gain tailored support
  • A strategic mindset, with the ability to influence growth and drive for results
  • A genuine interest in making a transformational impact on the health of all Australians.
