The Field Assistant supports the short- and long-term stewardship responsibilities of Jefferson Land Trust by implementing field-based activities that support the desired future condition of protected properties.
Job Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of stewardship actions including, but not limited to, invasive weed removal, restoration project maintenance, restoration tree planting, and tool maintenance
- Demonstrate strong work ethic and practice basic safety practices
- Work independently and as part of a team
- Represent Jefferson Land Trust to Preserve visitors and neighbors
- Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Experience in habitat restoration and maintenance field work including experience with common noxious weed management techniques such as grubbing blackberry roots, removing holly, and removing annual weeds with or without seed heads
- Experience maintaining restoration plantings
- Experience repairing and maintaining trails
- Experience operating chainsaws for bucking and felling trees
- Commitment to conservation with a passion for protecting natural habitats, farmland, and scenic open spaces

- Self-motivated
- Ability to listen to and carry out instructions, asking for clarification and support where necessary
- Ability to work individually and well on a team, both as a leader and a team member
Physical Requirements
- Physically able to conduct demanding field work with hand tools and mechanical tools (training provided) and traverse occasionally rough terrain in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to lift 20-40 pounds
- Ability to climb over brush, logs, fences, creeks, and other obstacles on protected properties
