Primary Purpose of Position:
The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a dynamic Program Coordinator of Accessibility to serve as an expert and resource for the Zoo’s Conservation, Education, and Science (CES) Section. This position is responsible for promoting outreach, engagement, and accessibility in all education programs and guest experiences offered by the North Carolina Zoo. This role ensures that onsite, offsite, and virtual educational content is accessible to all guests, regardless of the guests/participants abilities or backgrounds, and that educational initiatives cultural engagement.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Researching, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and events to expand program outreach and opportunity for the Zoo.
- Working closely with the education team to ensure all Zoo programs, interpretive media, events, the Zoo’s app, educational social media (i.e., Adventures in EdZOOcation) posts are designed for accessibility and engagement with all audiences.
- Working closely with Zoo-wide teams (e.g., Park Interpretive Team) and community partners to ensure we are meeting the needs of all our guests and reaching new audiences.
- Working cooperatively with other departments to achieve the overall mission of the Zoo.
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and outside of normal work shifts.
- Employee may be considered “essential staff” and required to work during Zoo emergencies.
- Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must be able to lift and exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects with or without an accommodation, negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot.
- Interpersonal, time management, leadership, research, planning, and organizational skills are needed for this position. This person must be proficient in public speaking.
- Must be able to hear radio communications and communicate verbally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, volunteers, interns and guests.
- Ability to speak effectively in public and express ideas clearly and in oral and written form.
- Must be self-directed and capable of working independently, since only minimal supervision is given in virtually all aspects of the job.
- Must be comfortable working with, maintaining, and troubleshooting problems with a wide range of technology used in self-guided learning (e.g., apps, sound equipment, video equipment), as well as be able to effectively communicate problems that arise during use and testing of software with developers.
- Must be comfortable and have experience working with mobile apps, app developers and contractors.
- A high degree of resourcefulness and problem-solving skills are essential for the employee to maintain public contact and respond to group requests.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
- Considerable experience developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and trainings.
- Considerable experience in adapting educational materials, curriculum, and resources to accommodate different styles of learning and abilities and ensuring that they are inclusive and barrier-free.
- Considerable experience evaluating interpretive and/or educational programs and experiences based on accessibility and/or program outreach objectives.
- Considerable experience providing training on disability awareness, inclusive teaching strategies, and/or best practices for accommodating diverse learners.
- Demonstrated experience of fostering relationships with outside organizations (e.g., local schools, community organizations, and disability advocacy groups) to ensure that educational programming is aligned with community needs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
Management Preferences:
- National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide certification.
- Demonstrated experience developing an advisory council or list of different user audiences representing a wide range of diverse individuals (e.g., individuals with a wide range of disabilities, ethnicities, and racial backgrounds) and working with them to provide feedback and guidance on programs, interpretive experiences, or to test new ideas and concepts for an organization.
- Experience with sound and video editing software.

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
